Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

  1. Figured out the trunk poppers would not work out where I had them, so I built little cans for them mounted in the corner braces; work now. Made an upper radiator hose fit around everything. Mounted and wired a terminal strip for the front lights. My buddy had picked up an old trunk to fit the rack we are making; noticed the lid had an odd seam and on a closer look, along with a little pounding, we figured out the body and lid would both telescope out to create more room. A bunch of lube and motion, we got it to move pretty good.

Isn't that always the case when making custom parts?

I played Punch the Sharp Thing. Lost that round.

Such a stupid game. Not sure why I play it.

It is just as bad as Touch the Hot Thing!

With winter coming on I knew it was getting close to the time I needed to refill my storage drum of gasoline I keep for the generator in case the area lost all electricity. I figured that $1.75 per gallon was about as low as the price would go. I loaded up my gas jugs and made the trip down the interstate to the truck stop. Hoping I do not need to use it this winter, it will go in my vehicles next Spring.

I spent a better part of the day pecking away at cutting and buffing my 33 pickup that I bought as an abandoned project. It was sprayed 3-4 years ago, half of it color sanded, half of that buffed, moved around a dozen times and scuffed up here and there and generally neglected. The body and paint itself is actually extremely nice so I decided to give it a clean slate before I correct it's stance and put proper tires and wheels on it.

Made a face mask for the 54 Chevy. To be used when social distancing is not possible. (We are driving it in a Christmas parade this Saturday night) 8660819B-884F-4D37-AB3B-249C03CDF99A_1_105_c.jpeg

  9. Buddies rack back from paint; so we bolted on the chrome strips and hung it on the car. Oak strips for the inside are in the works along with footman loops and some more hardware still at the chrome shop. Not quite OE; but will do the job as he travels a bit.

Took the heap out for errands, including another trip to the Dollar Tree store, which has apparently turned into the Old Red Ford Truck gift store. Got a few of these place mats to give away for Christmas, because I'm such an extravagant gifter.

Today I milled out an adapter to put a modern quick-change tool post on my 65-year-old Atlas lathe.

Now I can use current tooling, with indexable, replaceable cutting surfaces.

Yup. You know it. I just plowed a 4-flute carbide end mill through some fairly hard steel, on the power feed at a fair clip, like it was not even there.

  17. Started messing around with the headlights on my '47. Trimmed and mounted the buckets from the inside and welded the rings onto the the fenders. Using a pair of nos '42-'46 fenders I bought at Little Dearborn's auction to get away from dealing the bulgy '47 parking light pad on my '47 fenders.

Wife and I delivered our 56 to the Air Shop in Santa Ana for the dreaded Vintage Air Gen IV installation. I designed and made the lower dash panel for the controller and louver/vents. The installer has been doing this work for 35+years. Hoping for 3-4 days... FAA02B5B-345A-452C-86BC-276C0F031BB3.jpeg A8E05F56-135C-4D7E-BF27-E690E63E50D1.jpeg

One little step- I striped the paint of my 40 ford hood. And It, s in real good shape. Just have to tweak the mountingplate for the hoodhinge alittle bit and a small dent on top of the hood. Thats it. It feels good when things are better than you expected. 006.jpg

Removed left rear fender and running board. Plan to take off right side too, then plan to remove box. Plan is to get paint in between cab and box and inside of box. Box looks really good, fenders and running boards need a little work but better than I expected! IMG_3163.JPG IMG_3165.JPG

took some time to make a wooden dolly on a stick, so I can hold up my roof and still have a chance to hit with a hammer or slapper from the outside. 004.jpg 005.jpg
