I've no clue, but a size reference may help...i/e put something next to it. Is it as big as a mailbox, or something that can be covered up in your hand?

    Trying to help.

If a new Coke can won't fit, how about an old 5 cent, green glass Coke bottle? Perhaps it really is a cup holder?

I could see two cups sitting in it, and a place to dunk out a smoke.

If there were dimples on each side of the oval it would be an ash tray.

Hell my old man didn't need dimples for it to be an ash tray! He used to put his ashes into the turned up cuff of his dungarees if he had no other place!
