Jack Sheppard SR was the main person responsible for the Sprint/ Dirt Track racing in Tampa. His son Joe passed away in October of last year. I was given most of the family photos and memorabilia. This is the plaque give to Jack when he retired.

“Back in the Day” – Wisconsin’s Frank Burany had kind of a knack for winning midget feature races at Chicago’s Soldier Field – especially 100 lappers on the flat, full quarter-mile, paved oval. From 1951 through 1957, Burany, who called Milwaukee home, won six 100-lap main events, both AAA and USAC-sanctioned, at the mammoth arena in Chicago. Burany even had success previously at Soldier Field, winning the 100-lap Soldier Field Classic in September of 1946, wheeling his Frank Podriznik Offy to the win over Bob Muhlke and Ray Richards. In 1947, Burany won the 50-lap Chicago Park District Police Benevolent race. Burany defeated Tony Bettenhausen by inches as the pair locked wheels coming to the finish line as over 32,000 fans watched. Prior to World War II and right after, Burany scored Chicago victories at the Elgin Speed Bowl, inside the International Amphitheater and at Raceway Park. Burany raced midgets into his 60s and passed away at the age of 100 in 2016. A nice close-up, cockpit shot of Frank Burany is part of my collection. Unfortunately, I have no date, where it was taken or the photographer’s name for this image.
