I haven't posted in a LONG time, I went threw a mopar muscle car phase for a while.. But i am over it, lol.. I picked up a 49 merc gasser, (yes a gasser 49 merc its hideous) anyways the car has good bones to start out with.. it will no longer be a gasser/ street freak.. I already pulled all the suspension and sold it all off to a young fella who's doing a 53 Pontiac gasser. Threw the god awful exhaust system in the scrap bin. This car has been all over the internet so i have found.. The poor old girl has tons of shoddy work done to it. It will be a full rebuild now. Plans call for a 4"-5" chop, nova clip, 57 caddy caps, wide whites. It'll retain the 351c thats in it.. Itll just be a clean simple build.. Most likely itll be black with some pinstriping and white tuck'n' roll interior. I will try to post some updates for those who are interested.
Now that I know this car existed I'm really glad it ended up in the hands of someone who is undoing the street-freak horrors and making it into a proper custom. Good on you!
That won’t take much. Out with the straight axle, in with a proper front end. Then all you do is drop in a full interior, a few adjustments to the pinstripes, it’ll be fine. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I love gassers but that merc looks horrible as a gasser. Thank you for saving it and converting it to a custom.
Looks like you are off to a great start! I’m excited to see what you do with the merc! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
OMG, if I hadn't seen it, I would not have believed it. Save this car and make it the cool cruiser it should be!
THANK YOU for saving another Merc. What the heck was the person who turned this into a gasser thinking?!? Hideous....... I will be watching and LOVE that you are going to do this justice!
How can anyone build a gasser out of a Merc??? Please save it!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I couldn’t have said it better! Bondo! When I looked at that Merc, then the “ Stance is everything “ in the corner...... I said whaaaaat! Lol Bones
Yeah that was some magazine it was in.. i have no idea, i just found the pictures on the internet... i got it down near the ground now anyways.. even if its up on jack stands lol
Here's the way to go - Jerry Quesnell's Merc, looks radical but it's really just chopped, shaved and frenched.
Got digging around last night. Who ever did the body work on this poor thing smeared fill right over the surface rust.. lol.. Changed the door top and only welded the outter skin not the structural inside lol... the pin striping is very good though too bad it all has to come off...
Look at it this way, ya gotta fix it anyway so just make sure you save your pictures of the pinstripes and just recreate the whole pattern when you’re finished with repairs. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Praise be to you for saving the soul of that poor unfortunate Merc.. Be kind and chop that top so it looks like it should.
That Merc gasser looked better than I expected. I kinda like it. However, I'm glad to see you're making it a custom.
I love those factory "rivets"!? Wow.... I agree that it will come out great, however, what ever happened to doing something different? The chopped Mercury is iconic and looks great but it is a cookie cutter design. I love the traditional looking cars, '32s, '34s, Model A Rods, etc. but again, is there no room for creativity or is it just within certain parameters? If it were mine I'd more than likely do what you are planning but just playing the devils advocate on that gasser...
