Same with me I have always been a Ford fan but the 63-64-65 max wedges push my button. Funny even more than a Hemi.

Funny I’m about the opposite. I have driven Fords as my daily drivers for the past 15 years but never cared for any of their early vehicles in this era. I do really like the Mopars of this time but never owned one. Wedge, Hemi, all good we me. And that’s coming from a Pontiac guy. Randy

    Hello,

Talk about the “best of the best” at one dragstrip on the West Coast!!! What a drag race between those 4 teams and any other “stock” car in attendance. Cash prizes and notoriety at the same time. It may have been the beginning of the end as the Top Fuel Dragsters were now multiplying like bunnies and within a year, taking over the Drag News coverage at almost any Westcoast dragstrip. Money talks… So, the little guys, Competition Coupes, Altereds, Gas Coupes, etc. were there, but not there, in the weekly local news coverage.

This meet was to attract those hard core factory “stock” car racers and supporters. Factory stock by then had taken on a new meaning. The everyday drivers wished their factory cars looked and drove like these race cars disguised as STOCK. But, wait, where were the factory Chevy 409s and then the factory 427 Z-11 models? Those were not pushovers, by any means. A team of Strickler and Nicholson? The fact that it was a 4 team show would have given a bye advantage to one team. Maybe the others were touring on that date, too.

Well, at least they labeled them SUPER STOCK. At one time, a 348, 4 speed 335 hp 1959 Impala was classified as SUPER STOCK. (until they weren’t) Our 348/280 hp 58 Impala was once A/Stock, when the 59 Impalas ruled that SS class.

The Race Hemi became available in B-body Dodge and Plymouth’s in 1964 and it was the only year both the 426 Race Hemi and 426 Max Wedge would be available. The race Hemi was also available in 1965 B-Body cars but only a 426 Street Wedge would be available in B and C-Body cars. The street Hemi was introduced in 1966 and ran through 1971. In 1967 the RO and WO package was introduced as a super stock option on the Coronet and Belvedere as a lightweight/race package but didn’t include the cross ram Race Hemi. In 1968 The Cross Ram Race Hemi was once again available in the non street legal A Body Dart and Barracuda only, this would be the last year the Race Hemi would be available in a factory car.

    Approximate Race Hemi Production:
    1964 - 271
    1965 - 360
    1967 - 110 (55 Plymouth’s, 55 Dodges) Lightweight super stock package
    1968 - 155 Darts/ Cuda’s total

The shoe polish on the window looks a little out of place though.

[IMG] My 63 Max Wedge Plymouth that I've owned for 34+ years. High compression steel front end car that now has an aluminum front end that I put on in 1991. Still racing her in N/SS.
