Play-doh, modeling clay works great and less mess than grease. Wrap it up and put it back in the can for the next time.

    Now this, I like.
Thicker than grease, so won't squirt and spatter back out the clearance between the pilot ID and the driver, reusable, and easy cleanup.
    Looks like no downside.

I did that once on a 3/4" pipe. The bread plugged every water outlet that had a screen on it.

Sooo, basically you're getting double usage from your toilet paper. Verrrry thrifty if not just a bit unsanitary;)

  8. This is something I learned from a plumber that I worked for one summer when I was in High School.

Using bread when plumbing leaks in existing water lines makes it much easier to solder the joints. HRP

I was told only white bread. Non of the healthy ones like whole grains, wheat, etc. those don’t break down and the pipes will be constipated.

I always used grease as that was how I was taught. I kept an old Chev. out-put shaft around to align my clutch on my Chev. when replacing it. I used that to get the pilot bearing out also.

  13. Aligning the the clutch with a old output shaft I understand, I have done the same thing but how does using the output shaft help in removing the bearing?

I can't wrap my head around how that would be done. HRP

You already believe the bread works, Danny. Just go with the output shaft idea, OK?;)

I’ve heard of bread working well, even bar soap! I’ve only used grease or a pilot bushing puller & both worked fine for me.

First of all, you have to "find" toilet paper, especially after this first go round with the shortage a few months back, and now the doom of another shortage. The Play-Do (sp?) makes the most sense to me; it's easily formed and pushed into the recess, more or less stays together, and can be put back in the can. Try that with grease, bread, soap, spaghetti, whatever. "What's for lunch Mom? Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, just as soon as your Father is done working on the car; why does he keep stealing the bread? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

You can use different breads, but it may cost you more dough.......

  20. I'm with Jim here. I have heard of people driving all kinds of things in (grease, putty, now bread) there but it has never seemed to work for me.

I have used a big course thread tap, tapped the pilot bushing and run a bolt in them. A little heat also helps.

Beeno, had I not seen it with my own eyes I would not have believed it could be done. HRP

  22. I know right?

Here is one for the books. I crawled under a '57 Chevy truck with an old farmer when I was a kid and he just took a drift punch and slammed it with a 4 pound hammer (I asked him about the hammer and he said, "its just 4 pounds" ). No grease, no bread, nothing. When the hammer hit the end of the punch the bushing just came popping out. Guess its all in how you hold your mouf (SIC). ;)

Peanut butter, with the bread, and you can have lunch when you're done.
