The entrance to Lion’s Dragstrip, in front of the staging area and start line, and in front of the famous orange Lions Timing Tower.

Our normal Saturday event from 1957 to 1960 was to go to Lion’s Dragstrip. Usually, it was an all day and night event. We did not see our parents as we left early Saturday morning and did not get home until after midnight. This caused us to have a fast breakfast, and hot dogs for lunch as well as chili dogs for dinner. Standard teenage food consumption especially on Saturdays.

Then it depended on how early we left and arrived at the local teenage drive-in restaurant hangout for the favorite, gravy and fries with a Cherry Coke. YUM! It was/is a wonder that our teenage metabolism kept us slim and trim during all of this weekly food extravaganza. Sometimes, it was a double order of gravy and French fries, it was so good.

Upon setting up our pit area, the Impala is now in front of the famous orange Lion’s Dragstrip timing tower. One of our constant battles was against a centrifugal supercharged 57 Ford sedan. We usually beat him. So, we are in front, but it was always close.

Finally, on the return road to pick up our timing slips, we happen to be in front of K.S. Pittman making another fast run in the 41 red, Willys Coupe. We were actually in front of K.S.Pittman’s blue, Ford F100 tow truck on the return road.
