The pix I posted above are on a street driven hot rod. I modified the Hilborn parts for easy street use. We installed an electric pump (on a by-pass line with a check valve) to prime the engine......toggle off as soon as it fires......which is pretty much instantly. The engine is a 302 SBC, 11.5 CR 7500 RPM max. With 7A nozzles it idles fine, with instant throttle response. Very docile around town.....3.50 gears.

Bendix electrojector was used in 1958 by Chrysler but the pre solid state vacuum tubes in the unit were the problem. I remember seeing a picture of an early Chevy fuel injection test unit it was huge and they said it cost almost as much as a Corvette at the time. How many injected Corvettes would a dealer have to sell to justify buying one? No wonder they got a bad rep.

 

If someone replicated a vacuum tube EFI, I would gladly say its appropriate.

I have seen a ton of posts about making mechanical injection street friendly. Lots of add ons like idle control, dial a jets, vacuum operated fuel cuts to prevent over rich on the over run etc etc. At the end of the day its a mechanical contraption and its gonna have its own personality that will either be endearing or nerve tearing. Like a member of the opposite sex.

 

Here's my ancient Kinsler unit. It uses a Corvette FI intake.

My brother and I had seen all kinds of fuel injection from the stock Chevy 283 motors to the different styles and models at the drags. But, for all that those do for high performance motors, besides the factory 283 version, there was no Hilborn system built for the street, in the early 1960. Later, there were rumors that the tinker guys at Hilborn in Laguna Niguel were fast at work making the famous port injection units available for street use. But, rumors always exist.

As far as home engine builders were concerned, tinkering can lead to success, as shown by Larry Cerny’s cool looking 34 Ford Coupe. As I heard it roll up to the photo shoot location early one morning, the sound was powerful to say the least. We both decided to meet at the new Queen Mary in the LB Harbor for the background photo shoot. The Moon Tank on the front was an indication of Gas Coupes and Sedan Class racing. It gave me the inkling that this coupe had some power and it was not just a nice looking coupe. (and girlfriend)

Upon opening the hood for detail shots, it was very surprising to see a complete port style, Hilborn Fuel Injection System. At the time, it was one of the only street modified versions running. The chrome stacks were something we would see on an modified, Altered Coupe or Altered Roadster. Even the lower class SBC FED race cars had the SBC motors with Hilborn Injection Systems, but only for the drags.

So, this street version was not stock from Hilborn and had countless hours of experimenting to get it right for the ultimate street motor. It was a very nice set up and there was cause for much envy as it was the only system we had seen on the street functioning properly.

 

So do you have to lock out 5 gear in your five speed to be HAMB friendly?

 

Rochester FI on my '55 Belair back in the early '60s.....
Modified 7250 Rochester on my 327/375 motor, R nozzles and a few other mods, 100ll gas......have over 40K miles on it.......getting close to rebuild time........

 

My only car 1962-65+. Woulda run better with a stick shift and a dial-a-jet. But when you're in your early 20s, you wouldn't mind the hassle. New plugs every Saturday morning, polish the Halibrands.

 

Fifth is dicey. Sixth has to go.

Yes and patents sold to Bosch from which they blended with their technology and have gone on to develop and license much of that technology used today in most of the world’s gasoline powered auto and truck production.

 

I'm restoring an Algon sbc canted stack injector for a customer - has the hard-to-find Algon water necks and the super rare, stamped, original Algon injectors, distribution block and butterflys. I've got new Parker fuel lines and all of the brass and stainless parts have been polished. Blasting the intake this weekend and then on to reassembly and setup. I'll post pics when it's done.

During our time at the drags, the hot set up was the short angled tubes coming out of the low Hilborn fuel injectors, on any motor. We saw most of them on SBC motors in all classes at Lion’s Dragstrip. They were strictly for competition usage instead of a mass of carburetors. No one had the ability or knowledge of testing the short Hilborn tube system for street usage, as yet. That was not to come for many years, later.

For our first SBC 283 motor build, we wanted those Hilborn Injectors for our 1940 Willys Coupe. But, they were over our budget, so we used 6 Strombergs instead.

Also, of note, here is one of the most striking Fiat Altered coupes during those very early drag racing days. The Rasner/Reath/McEwen Hilborn Injected Hemi A/A coupe at the big, 1959 Riverside Raceway Drag Race pitting East vs West.

Here's the Algon for a y block I've got. It looks like Rich Fox posted a picture with one side on a y block head on another block. It came with somewhat crude brackets to mount the pump, and a y fitting for the water hoses. I was told (IIRC by jimmy six) that the metered bypass valve made these run strong on the circle track cars, giving better fuel control coming off the corners. I have no idea how to set it up for the street.

 

And here we are getting ready to run. My car ain’t so HAMB friendly!
