Technical 6 Volt heater fan on 12 volt

What I can tell you is the diameter of the motor is 3" and length of motor casing is about 3 5/16" and shaft diameter is 1/4"

 

I used one of these switches that provides two positions - full 12v in first position, 6v in second. Since you pull through the 12v first, it allows the motor to start without hanging up and allows you to go to 6v without issue. Running over a year now with lots of use, though it's not the aesthetic for everyone.

I just went and looked for mine, might have tossed it. As I recall the end to end on the shafts were around 8-10 inches, motor about the same as yours. I don’t recall the shaft diameter. But if it would fit just use the squirrel cages off of it. I do recall the cages being plastic

 

Thanks, but both 6 volt motors I have don't work anyway, that's why I'm looking at new 12 volt motors now.

 

Oh well, I'll keep searching. I'm not worried about the cages, I can always bore the ones I have to fit the motor shaft.

 

Here's a pic of the motor in question. The shafts stick out 1". I threw a pair of glasses in the pic just to get a feeling for the size

 

Oh heck, you’d have to cut the shafts down on the one I had used. Might still be an alternative tho

 

Yeah, cutting down the shafts wouldn't be a problem. The biggest issue is the size of the motor, there isn't much room for anything too large. I have some leeway, but not a ton!

 

Just went to the web and typed in 12v dual shaft motors...hit images...you'll see tons of ideas.

Yup, I saw that one. The biggest problem I'm running into is the length of the motor body, the ones that look promising turn out to be too long. Right now I'm looking at a motor for a 65-66 mustang. It looks like it will work. The wiring will have to be figured out on it though.

I did an "Amazon" search and found a 30 Amp, 12V to 6V reducer for the wiper motor in my '52 DeSoto. Works great, the motor runs at the right speed low and high. It was about $30, I don't know the brand. I've run 6V heaters in several cars on 12V, they seem to last but of course run fast, and the fan gets pretty loud. The one in my Diamond T has been working great for 7 years.

 

How about a zener diode?

Thanks everyone. I ordered the one I linked to from ebay. Even comes with the switch, so it shouldn't be too hard to figure out wiring.

 

Wulf, this is pretty much the same as the one I ordered off ebay, but the one on ebay had the switch, should make it easier to figure out

 

Most cars have a speed resistor in the air flow of the unit usally for 3 speeds low or medium setting should work

 

Zener diodes can be good for dropping voltage, however in a case like this you will have about as much power loss in the zener as the fan consumes. Zener diodes that can handle high power are quite expensive.

Hello , ok so my question is this, on the 1954 Chevy , I updated the whole car to 12v system along with 12v blower motor . Now the stock switch is a 6v switch ( trying to keep original functionality) with 3 settings OFF/ LOW/ HIGH .there is (1)wire spring resistor for low .it ohms out at 1 ohm . Running 12v through that resistor for LOW speed , gets hot .Will that resistor & switch hold up or burn out with 12v going through it .I think it will but .... . Or can that spring resistor be swapped out with say a 2 ohm resistor or would that increase the heat .I was able to remove the spring( resistor ) & am thinking of buying a newer car blower switch with the 3 speeds ( for 12v cars, steel a spring resistor with more ohms & see if that would work on the stock 1954 switch . I know it seems like alot of work but I want to keep it working like 1954 without burning something up . THOUGHTS ? other than wasting my time please .Gave a great day Brothers!
