1940 FORD SEDAN DELIVERY CUSTOM DASH/INTERIOR

    Hello,

My first 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was completely stock except for a Sony hand held portable AM radio hanging from the rear view mirror. That gave us some great teenage sound inside that hollow rear metal chamber. The air conditioning was the open front vent and windows. The one thing that stood out and became noticeable inside was the long LaSalle floor shift lever.

We had 1000s of miles of fun hot rod cruising all over the So Cal coastline and in our Friday-Saturday night cruising scenes. Speed shift a LaSalle 3 speed? What for, the rest of the Flathead powered sedan delivery was snail trail slow, compared to other old hot rods.

But, it would have been nice to have what was inside of Lee Bright’s 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. My first sedan delivery was a raw stocker with a floor shift and two plain bucket seats. Compared to the comfortable seating and the custom 1940 Ford dash, our two Ford sedan deliveries differences were night and day. All it would have taken was money and more money, but it was a hot rod for a teenager with meager resources. Cruise all day to and from high school, go surfing after school or on weekends, and enjoy the teenage lifestyle while it lasted.

We had a raw 1940 sedan delivery, but it was a fun daily driver. Lee Bright’s Yellow 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was also a daily driver and would show up at the local hot rod runs/picnics. It was well built and everything was a fine fit and finish. That is how hot rodding should be, simple stockers and full custom hot rods for daily driving all over where ever they may be in the USA, especially in mild climate So Cal.

My wife always wanted our 2nd Ford Sedan Delivery to look and feel like Lee Bright’s classic yellow hot rod. It was similar, but not quite as well built and looked a little different for us. The interior was several steps above our first sedan delivery. The interior was fully upholstered in tan with comfortable bucket seats. So, the sound from the outside road noise and wind noise was muffled to make cruising comfortable. Comfortable? Part of the custom dash set up were outlets for A/C for my wife and a nice AM/FM radio, plus a cool 8 track player. (A novelty)

It just was not our time to do all of the custom work as the Bright's yellow sedan delivery and drove it the way we fixed it up, again, all over So Cal as much as we could. The highlight of driving the 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery was that there weren't too many of them on the road. (If any) It had the look of my high school hot rod, but with more power and comforts. That was a plus and led to questions from people wanting to know "who made the van." Ha...

Almost a 100 mile round trip to see our parents on weekends was not a hassle during any weather, cold or hot. The SBC A/C sedan delivery was built for any weather and road trips weekly. One weekend, it was the Westside of Long Beach and the next was inland to the area near Knott's Berry Farm from Southern Orange County. Freeway or coastal highways, it did not matter, road trips were pleasurable and part of owning a hot rod.

DASH AUTOGRAPHS 3.jpg Dash Autographs 2.jpg Dash Autographs 1.jpg

Here's mine in my 32 5W. I am a big fan of So-Cal Speed Shop, (dealer since 1999) and a fan of Pete Chapouris and Alex Xydias. I was able to get these two guys to autograph my dash for me. Pete signed it in Dec. 2016 and passed away suddenly Jan. 2017. He was always nice to me and my family.
    RIP Pete!
