  2. Well...today is the 15-1/2 year-old mark and we are waiting in line to get a drivers permit. Pretty sure that is a good motivator to get to work. Still can’t believe my kids are getting this old.

Be HAPPY he wants to get his license as soon as he can. Too many teenagers now have no burning desire to get one.

  4. Finally made a little progress today. We unstacked all the crap that had accumulated on and around the pickup and pulled out the torque tube rearend so we could work out mounting the one from the 69 Camaro. Best I can tell, appears we can use the original Camaro mounting pads. We just need to figure out what all we need to do to get it low enough. Thinking of reversing the main leaf eyes, pulling a few leaves, and putting in some blocks. The front has Posies springs, so I suppose we could consider that for a better ride and likely shorter blocks. We will see, but at least it now has 5 bolt all the way around. Oh, we still need to find either a set of 15x7 5-spokes or one to match one or the other that are mismatched on rear now. Trying to use all straight spoke ones.

So close! Had to drop the spring on the right side to get it out...

Appears the spring pad spacing is right on for the original spring locations on frame.

  5. ...I've built a bunch of these trucks, on the rear I remove all but the longest five leafs,...then I made my own lowering blocks, maybe 4"...never had a problem with em.

Just an observation but what keeps that housing from rotating on those blocks?

The Smith’s Truck Company could be another shirt in the works. Keep the kids busy and teach them what they need to know to make it in life. Two excellent threads, Mr. Smith! Also, Great job on The Bad Banana ( another Father Son thing).

  12. I’m way behind on this build as far as getting it done for his birthday...since that was last Sunday. He was about a week late getting his learners permit, so doesn’t get his license until December 1st or so. Anyway, we are getting some family things worked out so we can get back to work, but in the meantime, I may just let him drive a Corvair that we got a couple years ago. Hopefully more updates soon. Pic is of Samuel driving us to his birthday lunch last Sunday, since we all know posts are way better with pics.

  14. So...since we are nowhere near done with this project, we are going to divert our attention to a smaller project for a few days so Samuel will have something to drive when he gets his license soon. Decided this car would be a good driver for him once we get it put back together. Uncovered it and made a list of parts tonight to get ordered... Also, found some poverty hubcaps this evening on that auction site and bought them to swap out for a little tougher look. I figure this is the perfect car for him to get used to driving a standard. It is kind of like driving a big go cart.

Corvairs are fun cars! I regret selling mine a few years ago. I had seen it in background pics of your projects. What condition is it in?

  16. It is a decent car that had a recent very amateur “restoration”. I bought it on an impulse at a swap meet since the price seemed cheap for a convertible that I thought my wife would like. The more I looked at it after getting it home, the more shortcuts I found on it. The biggest thing that drives me nuts is that the guy that had it put some later model seats in it that really need to go. I would like to find some original buckets and rear seat. Otherwise, it was running and driving when I got it. I just tore into it to try to fix some of the shortcuts. It will be more fun to work on now that my son wants to help.

  17. I don’t want to get too far OT in this thread, but also figured I might post a couple things about the work we are doing on the Corvair. Swapping to the poverty caps meant painting the wheels now. So, got those sanded yesterday and also found that it needed two new tires. Didn’t get them painted yet, but they are about ready. Also, the main reason I pulled this thing apart shortly after getting it was because it wouldn’t run cool enough. Pretty sure the rats nests and crap in the cooling fins had something to do with that. Got most of that cleaned out last night and also found one of those repairs that makes you laugh...

An interesting thing about owning Corvairs is the random way folks hang exhaust in them. I have seen more weird stuff hanging mufflers in Corvairs by a factor of 10 compared to other cars I've worked on. It's part of their charm.:D

You never know what you're going to find under an old car!

    Devin.

I'd still make you an offer if I had room.

  23. About got the Corvair back together. Hopefully it will run decent enough to get him by until we can get the truck done. He is ready to learn how to drive a standard.

As a Ford guy, i am a BIG FAN of Fans...what we call Vairs.....worked at a Chev dealership in 1965 & fell in love with these cars......fun & sporty. Really love seeing "the kids" involved....You sir are VERY BLESSED.

  26. Took our first drive in the Corvair yesterday after we got it running again. And, Samuel got his first lesson driving a standard. We still have work to do on the car and his standard driving skills, but we are getting there.

2 carb should make it a 102 horse...fun driver, especially with the top down. Still jealous here in CA.

  28. Awesome to go for the first drive. Lucky kid!

  29. Yep, took it for a longer drive (about 60 miles) this past Tuesday. We need to work out a few more things, but seems like it will be something he can drive while we finish the truck.
