I stole this picture from Mel Lawyer's FB post from this weekend's Midwest Forty Ford 80th Birthday Gathering. Too bad that trailer was parked in the way. LOL

Neal P. Knight captured this photo of Lonny Moore and Harry Sayers leaving the Midwest Forty Ford 80th Birthday Gathering in Lonny and Lynn Moore's '40 Standard Sedans. Unfortunately, Lynn didn't make it over for the weekend but Lonny was on the phone with him and he asked to talk with me for a few minutes, which was way cool.

Lynn had sold his '40 many years ago to George McDowell, who had carnut.com. I can't remember who all owned it after George sold it, but Lonny tracked it down, bought it, did a freshen up and repaint on it before surprising his dad giving it back to him.

Another Neal P. Knight photo that really made me smile. This is @Bigmac48 's sedan and my coupe towards the end of the day. What a cool thing for Dennis and his buddy Virgil to make the 2,300 mile round trip in his flathead powered sedan just to hang out with us for the weekend. A very cool car, and that Dennis guy is a pretty fantastic fellow, too!

Dale Caulfield's @Weedburner 40 Sedan Delivery is super cool, and I had a great time getting to hang out with Dale.

    Hello,

By 1959 Fall, we had already planned on getting out of the stock car factory racing class. Our thoughts turned to the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. A 283 Chevy motor in a lightweight coupe was going to do it for us. My brother’s friend in his 1934 5 window Ford Coupe was already winning trophies in the A/Gas class, using his big Oldsmobile powered daily driver.

I am pretty sure that my brother’s goal was to have a car that could beat that fast 34 Olds powered coupe. But, even after we got it running, time had passed and the races never happened between the two or for that matter, between the 58 Impala and the 34 coupe. Friends will be friends…

Upon seeing all of the So Cal Gas Coupes and Sedans racing, we knew we had the 283/6 Strombergs running in B/Gas with times of 13 secs and 100 mph. It had an Isky Cam and Strombergs. It was pushed to the limits, but we could see the writing on the wall. Not competitive enough for the B/Gas class competition. So, with the increase in engine size to 292, all blower specs and a new 671 on top, we dropped to the C/Gas class with welded in added steel plates for structure and pinpoint weight over the rear tires. Now, our C/Gas times were competitive with others and close to the national record.

We had heard of Jimmy Nix from the OKC area by reading the weekly Drag News papers. He was setting records in both classes and gave us some hope for setting our own records with the times we were getting at each Lion’s Dragstrip run in our own 1940 Willys Coupe. Jimmy Nix had ventured out West to run at the San Fernando Dragstrip and did his record setting runs in his big 1940 Ford sedan.

It would have been a great match if we had continued to run C/Gas or even ventured back into the B/Gas Coupe class.
