HOLES THREAD...drilled axles,backing plates,anything.lets see'em

I wonder if some sheetmetal starved rodder has found that and filled the holes?
There used to be a '30s Dodge or Plymouth two door sitting in the desert south of Mina, Nevada. It was striped and shot full of holes, hundreds of them. I used to stop and look at it. It disappeared and a couple of years later showed up at a car show in Carson City with all the holes patched except those in the stainless radiator shell insert. There was a photo album documenting the un-holing .

 

Must be one of them Aussie "Hole"dens.

Crap, should've resisted that particular pun.
Now I'll have to hire a mail bomb sniffing dog.

Amazing the early cars with the swiss cheese bodywork. It seems like it would induce drag like the dive brakes on the WWII dive bombers and actually slow the cars down.

 

Most of'em were on the back sides, with the objective being to vent pocketed air. In that very few '20s & '30s cars were much in aerodynamics to begin with, and at speeds seldom over 150, the practice likely had a minor positive effect at best. The sheet metal weight savings were also likely negligible. Heavier chassis metal, on the other hand ......

Hole saw companies' profits were slightly improved, though.

Then you fill the block and heads with aluminum and the weight savings is somewhat negated. Mill the fins off of the heads and save some weight.

 

Al "Suicide" Sanders 45 coupe he drilled it full of holes to lighten it up. For the Moody Mile at the New York state fairgrounds.
Unfortunately it didn't work out the way Al had hoped



Al passes about ten years ago.

I'd like to know too, but here is my guess:
The axle is a live axle as found in a sprint car. And the Ford Trumpets were used as safety shields for the driver's leg protection. "No need to leave them solid as the axle isn't going to break, let's drill some holes!"
