Yeah, Their "customer service" or lack of, was terrible.
Cant remember the owners name (Cody ? )but he was kind of a, well, dick. I have no complaints on their tire but after dealing with him I knew I wouldn't buy another pair of their tires no matter how good they were.

Towel City Tires is located in Kannapolis N.C. which back in the day was home of Cannon Mills (the world's leading maker of textiles & sheets. Thus the name Towel City. Kannapolis means city of looms. It was a great place to grow up in the 50's and 60's. Home of Ralph & Dale Earnhardt...……...

I didn't ask, call Bill at DB. He was pretty excited by it. I told him the HAMB boys would likely buy them all!

I have a somewhat related question. I have a pair of vintage M&H Racemaster Cruisers I want to run on my T. Should I run tubes??

    Yessir. They’re from the 60s.

  7. Hope it's only ''fairground'' driving. They've got to be hard as rocks. 60 year old tires at speed could be scary. Love to see some pics!

They’re actually in exceptional shape and very supple! Just waiting on a pair of chrome reverse to mount them to.

Those of you running Towel City on the rears and bias ply littles on the front, have you had any weird handling issues? All Towel City slicks are built on radial casings, either new or used, and combining radial and bias tires can result in some strange handling, just curious if this has been a problem for anyone.

  11. You do realize many very fast cars at Bonneville and Elmo are still running LSR tires produced 30-40+ years ago?

  12. Yes, indeed I do. However, the drag slicks in question aren't them. Plenty of options for new rubber in the pie crust slicks category. If you want to tell the guy it's a good idea to run 'em, go ahead.

@Blues4U I was a bit nervous but I did this anyway. I did not have, and still do not have any handling issues. I ran Hurst recaps in the rear until they started separating. I now run truck radials. Skinny bias ply on front, good alignment, no power steering. 20190803_183221.jpg

I ran 50 year old 135x15” Michelin X’s up front, and 60 year old NOS Atlas Bucron cheaters out back, for years ... with NO ill effects : Your mileage may vary! E09AA627-3F0C-43CE-88C9-E5C5110C3C5B.jpeg But I might be nutz...

A bit old thread, but wanted to respond to the radial question. Towel City recaps their cheater slicks on radial casings, not bias ply. So you will have radials all around with Towel City. I've got two gassers with them on the back, and no handling issues at all.
A second point to mention. Towel City also offers their cheater slicks built on brand new casings, so in essence they are not recaps if you chose to get them on new casings. The extra fee for new casings is I believe $45 per tire? Still very reasonable considering their prices.

I have a couple of thousand miles on mine now with no issues. They are a little unbalanced feeling when cold but other than that they work great. I haven't dumped the clutch on them yet but I have made some short speed runs on a lonely interstate. They do 140mph with no problem. Theoretically I mean....

I'm going to try a set of Pro Trac Street Pro tires in 235/60-15 size.. I have first generation Chevrolet Rally wheels on it with 15 x 7 wheel circle.

My recent failure with Towel City pie crust slicks.

These have 3300 miles on them, and were purchased almost two years ago, but only been on the road about 6 months. I bought them to mock up my car during the build, and get the radius right on the rear fender openings, so they sat a long time unused.
Towel City told me they have a 1 year warranty, so wouldn't fully cover the failure. But they are sending me a new tire built on brand new casing for $150 shipped. So although I'm not totally pleased, it's better than nothing, and hopefully the new tires will last a long time.
I have the same size Towel City slicks on my Austin gasser, and they've been on it for about 4 years with no problem, and they're built on used casings. Not sure Towel City even does these on used casings anymore, as I don't see that option on their site anymore?

  25. Any idea what caused it? Just looks like the outer layer came loose. Not fully vulcanized?

No idea, and they didn't reveal anything if they knew? But you're right, it appears to me that the vulcanizing process was uneven and that part of the tread didn't get it. The bond to the casing appeared to be just fine, so it wasn't letting go. But once I pulled it off the car I inspected the whole tire, and found what looks like a hairline crack going width wise across the tread also. So I think something was going wrong in the process?
I've got a new pair coming, and the other tire will go into storage as a spare in case my other gasser has an issue with the same tires on it. They're about 4-5 years old no with no problems.

Anybody notice Towel City recently changed their tire offerings for pie crust slicks? They no longer offer any recaps on old casings! Everything is now built on brand new radial casings. This is a very recent change as I checked their site not long ago, and they offered them both ways; new or used casings.

Just to clarify, my question was about running Towel City slicks (radial) on back with bias ply tires in front. Any time I've mixed radial ply and bias ply on the same car it caused some strange handling, or feeling. Did it on a motorcycle once, now that was really weird, I would not recommend it....

I think the heavy sidewalls, and tread on a pie crust slick make them work better with a belted front tire than if the tire was the typical radial in the back with more flexible sidewalls. So doubt the combination would be the same handling problems the belted front and radial rear would have with other rear radials.
