Hot Rods Resurrection of an Old Hot Rod

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JNKYARDDOG_1, Aug 12, 2020.

  1. About a 2 years ago , I came across this OLD Hot Rod 34 Ford Truck found on one of them interweb ads. Got the truck home and not sure what I was going to do with it at the time with so many irons in the fire already. So I tryed to sell the truck at the Good Guys show Spring last year.. LOTS of interest but no one really stood up to the plate and made a offer, So back home it came and got pushed into the back 40. Meanwhile as time went on I had got parts and pieces for another build I was doing at the time. But some bad judgment calls on CHEAP parts that put that build into a category of unsafe, I looked at that 34 Truck HMMMM this might be a quick easy build.. As the Bones looked to be good.

    The truck as found..

    Made the truck a roller..

Found a Grill and some headlights... Snow in AZ Imagine that..

As time went on some more.. Went back to Michigan for the first time in 37 years, killed a couple stones with a single bird.. Visit Dad and goto The Woodward cruse, also see the old neighborhood and such,... Well the bug HIT I need to get that truck done now...

Goal would have been a 1 year build and come back to MI for Woodward again but with the truck ! HAHAHAHAH.

The Truck came up to the garage and started to tear it apart..

    Off came that Fugly bed..

Now what sux is a Bunch of pics some how disappeared off my phone/camera.
Pulling that Olds out and finding out it was JUNK, Tryed to find another to replace but nothing local at the time. also found out it was going to cost a lot of $$$ to rebuild one of those old beasts if I did find one. So at this point decided to do what everyone else has done the last 70 years put a SBC in it considering I knew I had a good runner sitting..
All those mock up pics GONE..

I knew that the Frame needed to be boxed so the front half was done..

At least this pic was saved?

  6. Pics are deceiving, But for most part yes solid, Right door needed surgery, One rear cab corner, Also bottom of cowl small repairs on those spots.

  7. Being a Old Skool build wanted to keep that look. It did have juice brakes already on it, Good starting point. Found a set of Buick 45 fin drums so had to adapt them on to the original hardware..

    20190831_191421.jpg

Took them to work and turned on brake lathe, Getting the correct angle and bit was the trick,
Damned missing pics again of how it was set up..

    20191009_191125.jpg

Some unique backing plates I found on that auction site, They was bare casted no trim work was done, What a chore that was to make fit especially in the spindle area..

  8. Did find a 33/34 bed, As we know these things hung off the back like a over size load.

Let the Bobbing begin.. If I recall cut about 18" off the back to get proper look.

    20190525_130543.jpg

When I ordered new rear pockets due to rust, Got the wrong years UGH, Instead of sending back, waiting for the correct ones got the body hammer out and started to form over a Piece of 3/4 plate to square off..

  9. The cab being Channeled The bed has to be done also..
Can see where a cab corner had to be replaced.

Looks like a spring behind was installed in the rear. I would appreciate pictures of the work if it is good quality. Especially the position of the cross member.

  16. I do believe that all 32-4 ford trucks/cars had spring behind. And the 33/34 had a unique curved forward spring.. maybe @alchemy can pipe in on this a bit more..

Trying to get new bushings into the spring and rear end so I can paint and button that up, will take pics when done

  18. For the passenger door it had some ROT and the hinge pins was beyond boogered.. They had to be cut apart and find some new hinges..
Repaired the bottom lower section inner and outer, Body work on the outer then Primer.

  19. Next I dove into the transmission while it was out of the frame..
Complete tear down and all new bearings and synchro.
One thing to remember on the main shaft one short bearing and one LONG bearing goes in it or will NOT go together DOH ! fought this for several hours taking apart and back together..

I have used this stuff on a couple different chassis OT vehicle and it works well..

  21. Great job so far! How much bigger, ( if any) are these cabs compared to an A cab. I know I’m too big for an A, but would love one.

  22. about 1 1/2 wider and 2 inches longer inside... I have a carcass of a "A" cab..

Seems most the added length is in the cowl if I remember correctly.

got any dried shots of the chassis black? Been thinking of doing the same on my current build. Liking the idea that it would be so easy to touch up if I had to change something or it got a major ding

  24. Tim,
I measured inside. Dash to back and door jamb to door jamb.

Frame has been outside so it dirty I can get like that if you want?

That’s perfect man I appreciate it!

I think I miss remembered the cab dimensions. I think a 33-34 pickup has a different firewall and gives more foot room than the 32 and that’s where my thought came from.

did your spray the black paint or brush it? Looks great
