Last year - took my son for Speed Week. Having read about the flats as a kid in various rags; it was like standing on history. I recommend going at least once.

  9. Its been a bucket list item for years... this year, through some scheduling magic I will be in Utah that exact week working at a customer site.
Although I will probably only be able to attend the event on Thursday and Friday I am looking forward to it. The fact that my work is picking up the airfare is a bonus

  10. My first Speed Week was in 1970 ... my family was heading home (to Fremont, California) after spending a week at my grandparents farm in Minnesota ... and Dad made a little detour near Wendover Utah :D

Here's a few pics of the "HAMB-friendly" cars I saw that day:

I caught "Salt Fever" that day ... but my mother & younger siblings must've been given a vaccine, 'cuz unlike me, they have never returned to the "Great White Dyno."

I had planned to attend Speed Week 2020 (with the Markley #360 Fuel Roadster team) ...but those plans got cancelled :(

  11. Drove the Model A in 2003 and been trying to get back since. Leaving Wednesday :)
I hate to admit it but this will be the first time I have ever trailered my Model A, I'm not as young as I used to be.

The first trip was 2007 for me as well, influenced by the "Worlds Fastest Indian". Went with my oldest Brother Jerry. We returned in 2010 with his 90 T-Bird, he left with a 264 MPH time slip. Been working on salt cars ever since.

    1989 was my first year.
It was the last year that they held tech at the airfield.
I think I,ve only missed 8 or 10 years since

  19. My first Speed Week was 1998 for the 50th. I believe 2005 was my last visit. Hope to make it again in the future.

First time was 1988 in my 51 Merc. Got cut out of the group photo of cruise in cars that showed up in one of the rod magazines.
I had my dad with me, we took my kids back to their mom when she was living in Texas and then after a couple of days in Texas drove like a maniac from McGregor Tx to Bonneville to get there on Saturday Morning. We didn't get to stay long as I had to get back to Washington early in the week.

Sounds like you might be taking a rental car to the salt. If so ask around about how to clean it before taking it back. Last I heard they had some pretty stiff penalties if they find salt on a rental car being returned.

1998 was my first for the 50th also. Six of us from mid-Missouri went together in 3 cars (Clarence was one of them). Been back twice since and will go again someday. Seems like every year there's something keeping me from getting there.

b-t-w; are you in the 360* picture that they took? Clarence is in that pic. He was black back then.

  24. First time out was 2010. I had been helping my friend charlie at El Mirage for a few years and after he set a few records in E/PP he asked if I wanted to drive. Of course I jumped at the chance. First time on the salt and I got to make several passes so the fever set in. The next year I was out there in my own truck and now ten eleven years later I am running in Gas Roadster class. It's a disease we hope not to find a cure for. I will be headed out there in two days.

My one and only visit (so far) was 2008. The year of the Kiwi invasion, with a large number of racers and spectators from New Zealand that year.

Always loved hot rodding and street rodding because no 2 cars are the same. Went to Bonneville in Summer of 2012. While eating breakfast at The Flame 7:30am there were guys putting there life on the line right next door on one of the 2 open lanes. Just an amazing life changing trip.

Like the old Frito-Lay commercial, bet you can't eat just one. Well same with Bonneville, bet you can't go just once. First time was in 2007. Went with a couple of friends and as we come up over that last rise and could see Wendover and the salt, we were just vibrating with excitement. Like a kid on Christmas morning. Got in on the Friday and had rooms at the Nugget. Tremendous show in the parking lot. Just a perfect experience. Got pit passes and rode bicycles through the pits taking pictures of the cars and crews. Watching the cars lining up for tech. Going out to the course and walking down the lines of cars waiting to take their runs. You can go anywhere except for out on the course past the starting line. Wore shorts and the only place I was sunburnt was on the ankles of all places. Yup, nothing like that first experience at Bonneville. Just loved it.

First time was in 2002 with a bunch of street rods. My brother said we have to go to Bonneville because the dry lakes is where it all started and we need to see what it is all about. We return in 2004 with the Studebaker race car to get the car past tech and get the driver licensed. We made our first 200 mph pass. The next year we returned with the blower motor and the following year we broke our first record. It has been the experience of a life time.

  29. First Trip to Bonneville 1964.jpg I first went to Bonneville in 1964 and have been 30 times since, and worked on some of the mile markers three times. Got the bug bad and had to go almost every year.

I was all set to go a few years ago, had the time off of work, money set aside.......

And the salt was flooded. No races.

I'm hoping another opportunity will present itself down the road.
