I think this might be one of the oldest pictures I've ever seen, showing the use of a sedan as a race car or hot rod.
@Stogy... got an idea about what year this picture might have been taken?
Thanks for all the great pics.

I think there was a Sedan that ran the lakes with a Wind up key sticking out the back...I'm wondering if this is that?

Ricky I tried to find connecting dots with this pic and come up dry...perhaps some of those that know may chime in...

It may very well be in this extensive Thread...

  5. Stogy, the first photo you posted was the "Screwdrivers Club" 32 sedan. Not sure what year these are from, but the
Don Corwin sedan ran at the 1949 El Mirage meet. The last photo is of the Butke - Corwin sedan.

Thanks @lurker mick for sharing the images and details...that is one sharp looking Hotrod...there certainly was a quality look to the Screwdrivers Deuce with the Corbin Tudor not quite up to par but looking more finessed in that bottom pic you posted...

Just an unrelated observation in the bottom pic the I think 40 convert has some pretty fancy Masked Streamlining happening at the Fwd Rear Fender...

Well... we knew that sedans were rarely used for racing in the early days. I stated as much in the 40s era thread. But we also knew that it did happen. And there they are. So at least as far back as post-war 40s. Nice heavy chop on the red sedan LOL.

    Thanks, @lurker mick

Do you have a YouTube channel called this old hotrod? If so I watched you pull this car out just last night. So great. I’m sure everyone on here would love to see a thread on it!

Andy Granatelli didn’t build this car, Joaquin Arnett did 100%. Joaquin sold it to him reluctantly . Granatelli’s styling cues were limited to a white paint job.

Reluctantly...that well describes most of us when selling your heart and Soul...Andy did do some sizable mechanical updates and there were other owners...and it's a Survivor...

I stand corrected...So Andy was one of several owners of this Looker...I have to say it is interesting that despite multiple owners the Original Bean Bandit Hotrod Base was respected and not bastardized...many times this was not the case...Perfection is a beautiful thing...

Dan thanks for correcting my incorrect info I will update it...;)

Thanks Ricky, You did ask what year...I going to say 1948ish as he joined the Screwdrivers in 48...there is a chance he started it after the war which would have been around 46 but he raced it in 1950 with the distinctive nose fabbed by none other than Frank Kurtis...it seems Jim then went back into service and the Sedan then changed hands shortly after...

This is Quoted Text from our friends at Kustomrama regarding the Papworth Sedan...

"Jim ran the sedan in the B-Class in 1950. It was chopped and fully fit with a belly pan. The front was from a Kurtis Kraft, and the engine was a 3/8 by 3/8 Ford with a direct drive to the rear end. It id not have a transmission. The rear end was a 3.27. Jim set the class record of 133.32 on a two way average with the sedan. The one way speed was 139.86. The record lasted for one day."

Yes it would...Perhaps those in the know may chime in...but typically in many Hotrod pic situations we may have to settle for a single shot...but we shall see...they certainly must have known of Gene W's land speed Coupe judging by the windshield mods...

  22. That is wild. Is that a straight-eight with eight carberlaters? [A: Kustomrama says 8 with 6]

I question the 100% nitromethane claim.

Straight 8 with 6 Carberlaters works for me...:)...nitro that's @racer-x's territory and back in Bloom Boom days maybe Crazy Times were less policed...hence the nitro before the suit...or it could have been Hotrod jibber jabber commonly known as BS which was no doubt plentiful...and is truly Traditional...

...It is hard to decipher when a look started as this T Highboy Coupe almost has a modern ring to it but I believe this to be around 46 to 50 and unaltered...the Roadster has racing guards ahead of the rear wheel as well which was typical of the Beginnings of protection on The Roaring Roadsters which I believe did multitasking between the track, strip, dry lakes and of course the wide open roads...

It is a choice what part of the Moment of Inspiration in the past one wants to enjoy...and in a licensed form that encompasses many stages of dress and there is an ambience to every one of them..

    I enjoy them all...
