never seen one but its pretty cool. not a ford part, no name any where? looks like it was working for a while as the drive is pretty wore

 

No vacuum hookup? Industrial maybe?

 

Part of it looks like a aftermarket Mallory unit, possibly marine? HRP

squirrel got it again i believe, lucas. seems i remember UK mart talking about here somewhere

 

Looks like that Lucas one yes! That's what was on my car and ran it until the end of last season. Worked ok but needed some fine tuning. The cap is broken on it too. And the cam is warn out too...

I've got one on the shelf, I've never used it. I wonder if the Brits among us can help source new or NOS caps, rotors, and points for them? Can the Prince of Darkness build a good distributor?

 

^ Found some guys that do Lucas magneto repairs, will contact them and let you know.

 

I ran mine for half a season but my cap was broken (as you can see in the pictures) and well, the points were bad and the drive was starting to flatten .. but otherwise, it ran half decent. It was starting to misfire a bit sometime probably caused by humidity and a combination of the rest of the condition of the dizzy which ran surprisingly good for it's condition.

 

please post it on here. I might be interested in rebuilding this one as well.

 

Just to update you on the spares situation. Have tried a number of places over here and all I have got back so far is that it is a very rare magneto. Still awaiting for a couple of replies

It might be a VERY rare magneto, because it isn't a magneto. It's just a distributor. It doesn't have magnets inside. Search for distributor parts instead.

 

Thanks for putting me right " alchemy " have not got a clue where I got magneto from. Got some part numbers to work with now.

Cool. Wonder how much US$$ is 185L's? Note the NOS cap comes with vintage dead bugs in it.

That's more than I paid for a whole distributor.

 

There is a NOS cap on ebay in France for 95 Euro about $111. If anybody would like I can keep my eyes open for NOS parts.

 

Dont they say " that's where two fools met , one for asking and the other for paying ?" LOL

 

Awesome !!! I think it'll be my next mini project. I'll rebuild this unit and maybe sell it or keep it.... see how it looks after I'm done

Glad to have been able to help out " Departed ".

 

It's a Lucas commercial or industrial distributor. I have a NOS one here. They're ok but not great. They are compatible with long nose cams or you need a button. The weak point is the rotor arm. The spark eventually shorts down the side of the rivet and shorts out to the shaft. The points have a very wide foot and run on a 4 lobe cam. By some miracle the desired dwell angle is achieved. There is no vac advance or brake.
The neat thing is the crossover wires are dealt with internally in the cap. there should be a smaller secondary cap over the middle of that one.
Personally, other than the novelty value in the USA they are not a superior unit compared to a crab and are not worth spending mega bucks on, especially when you tot up the cost of spares.
Points turn on UK ebay occasionally (look for the wide foot) and caps rarely.
There are Lucas magnetos that look similar but a lot longer. I have a couple of those too. the caps look similar but are different. the mags are intended for industrial applications, although Ken Cooper and now his son Bradley Cooper, UK flathead drag racers use a heavily modified Lucas mag on their dragster.
The UK Ford Pilot distributor is similar looking but has an 8 lobe cam, narrow foot points, a vac brake and a different cap.
