Technical First attempt at filling the roof on my 35 5W. Advice needed.

Very nice. If NYC had decent roads I could go for that stance but I'd be sure to leave pieces on the road if I did. Sweet ride. Black is awsome.

 

I think you have it licked. That poor little car suffered at the hands of someone who never should have touched it, but you have her back on track.

Went to one of Ron’s metal working classes at Cecil Taylor’s
Shop and both are metal masters and it was amazing how different they would attack the same problem and end with beautiful pieces that looked the same. One used the most basic tools and the other all the newest tools. Wish I was 20 years younger to master some of their skills. Please keep the post going

I think I've got enough tacks I'm place now. Gonna get to sleep early so I can be fresh when I lay down the lead tomorrow. Got a very slight oil can at the angry face area. I'll lay a bar or three of lead on it to stiffen it up.

 

My new neighbors are at it again. Had to get dressed to come out and ask them to be reasonable. So here it is 5am so I figure ill get a super early start. Man I so want to get out of NYC. When the Lord comes to take me I'd like to go in peace and quiet not booming suck ass kid music.

 

Did a short section of leading. A quick fill and file so I'd know how much lead to put down. This test showed me I put on too much. I used half a stick and wasted 20% of what I used. Now inside to make some spam and eggs and give my dog her meds.

 

This leading business sure is hard work. A full day at it and I'm still not done. I'll fill the deep depressions with lead but will use filler to smooth out the roof.

 

You are leading it without fully welding it up?!

 

Got plenty of solid tacks on it less than 1/2" apart.

 

I think I know what Tman is thinking and I would agree. Then I remembered this is a traditional site and Do It Over's efforts are better than most traditional cars done 70 years ago. How well will it hold up and what will it look like in 40 years? Pretty sure I won't be around to critic it.

I understand the tack weld concern. I have melted a lot of lead out of spot welded seams. Its gonna out live most of us anyway.

 

OK, I submit. Leading is most definitely a practiced art and one I'm not cut out for. Plan to spray some Phosphorus acid on the rust to deal with the old rust, wipe,, water rinse,, baking soda spray, water spray and wipe again. Going to do a coat of fiberglass filler in the deeper recesses and around over the lead. Should I use All Metal instead of the Eagle Claw ?

 

In my opinion, I would use the all metal to fill the deep spots. Then put a coat over the whole roof of the rage and block it all out.

I’ve used all metal but seems like I had adhesion problems later on. Been using duraglass since.

 

I used All Metal & felt like there was adhesion problems also I really like Rage Gold I would use that if it was my choice

 

Back at it. It's prepped and ready for frosting except for to soft spots. I've tried a couple times to tighten these areas up but only managed to turn them into sink holes. I decided to glue these two patches underneath. My thinking is that two layers of steel will be much stiffer than the one. Figure I got nothing to loose.

 

sometimes an over shrunk area can act like an area that needs shrunk.
try just hammer and dolly work on that area an see if it changes

 

Understood. I tried that twice but ended up with the same result. I believe if I had put more crown in it with the English wheel I would have avoided this problem. Lesson learned

 

Works like a charm . Lots of adhesive. Lots of pushing up. Lots of turning/twisting/pressing.

You've come a long ways getting to this point, and learned some new skills along the way! Good job, now is when you need a template to get the final shape nailed down with it maintaining a consistent change in the curvature even if it is slightly off from what Henry built.

 

Think I'm just about done now. A little detail work here and there but its smooth enough to move on to the rest of the work.

Its all done but the crying, mostly . Parked at moms next to my long time sleeping 429SCJ Mach1. Got to take in a paying job for a bit. Next on the coupe will be figuring out how to remove the beat up tail panel and repair it.

 

Congratulations on getting the roof done. Your effort and care is the definition of perseverance. The tail pan hopefully will be a little kinder.
