Billy, you might be referring to my Brother Tom's '40 convert, from 1960. He found it sitting outside a body shop, and bought it for $25.00. The work was all done in lead, using a narrowed 49 Chevy hood, Packard grille and Lincoln headlights. Pat Ganahl alludes to it as, "Your Brother's Ugly 40 Ford"!
It could be a mix of body parts, but the hood keeps saying 39 Ford or 40 Ford standard to me and frenched 40 headlights. The running boards and body look Ford too. Not a clear picture and it has had a lot done to it which make forensic work a little tricky.
No. The hood is certainly '39-40 Merc because of the "scallop" on the side. The headlights look flat like '39, to me (not '40).
If you go to the "speedhunters" link that appears with the original image, there is a somewhat larger version of the same image.
Sorry guys, for various reasons, I could not see the car you were referring to, I thought it was this car: Now I can see the car in question, yes I agree it is definitely a Merc.
This link is to a dealership which has a CHOPPED '40 four door sedan. So, it fits this thread if not the overall HAMB scene. https://www.rkmotors.com/vehicles/3582/1940-ford-sedan
Here is a subtle mod that I ripped of FB. Note: The wheels identity were hidden to protect their hideousness. But I like the corvette treatment of the front headlights. No bumper, little chop, uber low stance, Swan neck mirrors, it has a look.
Here's my "Hot Rod" version of a '40 Ford coupe, when I took it to Gene Jorden r.i.p. in the Tri-Cities, Wa. We discussed several ideas, then he said how much are we "gonna chop it" that wasn't in the plan.. He'd chopped a lot of cars, but never a '40 Ford! Said I'll think about it, spent some time cutting up photos & gluing them back together. Thought a '40 is so rounded and continued with that, door upper rear corners, upper trunk corners, removed the trunk handle, the license plate stayed because that's a big panel without something, replaced the square trunk emblem with a recessed Ford blue oval. Both frenched Studebaker taillights & headlights, leaving the park lights, upper door hinge exchanged for '48 hinge, peaked & lots of louvers in the hood, filled the air vent. Now for the slice, I came up with 1 3/4" Gene said he only had 2" tape, had him remove the drip rail & cutout & slide the rear of the quarter window forward, then he replaced the drip rail with a '34 coupe looking molded seam and lowered the uncut rear window down to better align with the side windows. That's a 514" Cadillac to a 350 turbo to a Quickchange, unable to finish the project. Delivered it to California, the buyer's stepson was there & talked how it was going to get a 2" chop, not realizing it had been done... dyno dave
I was defensive when I first responded to this, as I really do love my '50 Merc wheels/caps and have never thought that full wheel covers look right on prewar cars. After re-reading this thread, though, I can see a case for a Plan B wheel treatment on my car, and that would be to use '56-57 Lincoln wheel covers on painted steelies. It never occurred to me to use those caps on a '40 until the last year or so, but I now see that they look particularly happy on the '40 body style:
50Fraud, Your green 40 looks spectacular with those wheel covers. Perhaps I misunderstood but, were you still able to use your Merc wheels with those caps?
Thank you, but the green coupe is not my car. It belongs to Tom Harris, and is incredibly subtle in that it's been sectioned 1 3/4" inches (I think that's the dimension). I posted that picture merely to illustrate the Lincoln wheel covers that I think would look good on my convert (the car in my avatar). I won't actually do that, however, because I have a young fortune invested in the chrome wheels and Merc caps that have been on it since it was completed.
I can't imagine that the police are very enthusiastic about Tom's rear license mount, but it sure does minimize the eyesore that Ford made.
Factory location, factory license plate holder as part of the tail light assembly, State of Tennessee shaped 1955 plate. I dare the cops to ticket me.
