Hot Rods spare tire on the fender, hanging off the back or none at all?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 15, 2020.

  1. During the hay day of Resto-Rods spare tires were often seen on the running boards or hanging on the back of A's, T's , Deuces and darn near everything else, I'm sure there are still some out there but I often wonder what happened to all the Resto-Rods from that era.

This is my old Deuce mordor I was driving when I joined the Hamb. HRP

I like em on the running board myself HRP' That being said I haven't had the pleasure to own a vehicle with them there. So I'm basing my opinion on aesthetics only. Joe

  3. Joe, when I found my '32 pickup it still had the fender mounted spare. HRP

No offense to anyone, but I don't like any exposed spare tire on a hot rod, back or running board mounted. First thing I used to do in the old days was to stuff them in the trunk or out of sight. Exposed, they just looked like we had dad's car. for the night, but that's just MHO.

I like the tail end, as on the cowl / fender can get in the way of working on the engine if necessary.

"I don't need no stinking Spair",
LOL,if your not around my age,u may not get that!
I did an do have a small scissor jack behind the seat, plug kit,but no longer have bike pump=replaced with can of Fix-a-flat. Just no room in a open wheel 28 roadster with the trunk cut off.
I do kind of like Continental Kits of all types. But never owned one !

  8. None taken, with Brenda being in the flower business she did a lot weddings and it was only natural to offer my service as a chauffeur in my '32 Ford fordor sedan, I had a " Just Married " cover made for the spare tire and would be on hand for photo's and then drive the newlyweds to the reception.

We were celebrating our 40th anniversary at the Nat's South in Knoxville, Tennessee when this photo was taken. HRP

  10. Since this question has been posed in the hot rods section, I don't believe they belong in either location.

BACK, few cars look good with fender wells IMO. 1933-34 Fords look horrible with side mounts. Bob

Both front fenders, and two on the back.

Did I just have a stroke?

  16. Back in the 70s my dream car was a 31 Ford Deluxe roadster with dual sidemounts. But since then I have changed my likes to no visible spare. They look ok on the back on some cars but fender mounts look kinda cluttered unless its a restored car.

I remember those "looks like an antique that someone stuck newer wheels on" days. I've seen some 30's luxury cars that carried it off pretty well. I've seen a lot of Fords that looked like someone borrowed Grandpa's stock Ford for the weekend, rolled it in the garage and stuck mag wheels on it and went rod trotting. One still had the stock A wheels in the fender well mounts once.
I was thinking about running the rear mounted spare on the 31 Vicky before I sold it simply because the mount was already there and it gave me a spare without using up interior space. No spare is cute when you don't get very far from home but not so great when your first road trip is 2500+ miles one way without any side trips.

  18. Spare tires look wrong on any hot rod no matter where they are mounted. Jesus, just call the damn Auto Club.

How about this hot rod of Jay Leno's? I think it looks ok with a spare.

Actually just a Duesenberg Model J without a body. Hot rod from the factory. :)

My 33 Chevy sedan has it on the back like originally built. My coupe has no space anywhere, even for a space saver. If I go a distance with it, I have to pull the trailer.

  26. I have a spare tire........
....but I plan to go on a diet first chance I get.  :p

  27. Trunk on back, spare in fender. Trunks may not look good but they sure are practical.

I was about to take a picture of my Austin but I found this one in my files. I have no excuse not to run a spare. Scan-200330-0003.jpg
