History Ryan - History of the HAMB?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 14, 2020.

  1. -2572- and I thought I was late to the party when I signed up. I remember finding the HAMB in 2001-02 but didn't sign up until I bought my '29 Chev in 2004.

  2. My scrollover only shows join date and number of posts. Can anyone help a brother out?

Edit: Decided to try to get a screenshot to show where the number actually shows up hoping that might help some.

  7. Larry, I would guess only Ryan knows that I would think there are a lot of us, it's a small price to pay for 365 days a year of knowledge and my way small way of helping to supporting my favorite web site. HRP

Lurked for a few years, but didn't join until Jun 9th 2007, which was right after getting back to the UK from attending the last Paso Robles show with A32Flathead.
    You back now Dave?

Formative times. Found this place through "Mart's Real Hot Rods" site over in England way back when I searched "real hot rods" on the www.worldwidewebdotcom/internets... , clicked on a link to the Jalopy Journal (these editorials are not for sale, only we knew the value of a clean set of white walls, I dig bubble tops and I think I'll cut up that coupe of mine... etc.) and subsequently found the the HAMB from there...

Then weirdly discovered that Ryan was actually living right here in Kansas City–had no idea. We became fast friends and that was that. And still is.

  22. Good to hear from you. Any car updates? Hope the bike is still treating you well also?

I lurk much more than I have posted here over the years. I was surprised to see that my number was 413.
I'd take that 413 any day over a fuel-injected Stingray...

Whew. Glad to know I'm just a semi-FNG...and not "THE" FNG:D

I feel like I've told this story a thousand times... but here it is condensed:

I came back from an extended stay in Europe after promising my mom I would go to college. Went to University of Oklahoma and took an HTML class my first semester. My final project for that class was The Jalopy Journal. Keep in mind, HTML didn't even have an image tag at the time... We just got wide spread acceptance of font colors at the time.

Before that though... and while in Paris, France... I saw what I remember to be a 33/34 coupe done in a traditional style. I had no idea what it was, but loved it.

That lead me to Don Montgomery books... And that's what initially formed the focus of The Jalopy Journal.

Anyway, The Jalopy Journal was just kind of like a build log for my '38 coupe. And then, I started getting emails from people asking for a message board. I didn't much care for social media then either, so I resisted... but finally gave in with this announcement:

"Here's your hokey ass message board..."

The name stuck... and to this day, I hate it... but here we are...

But The Jalopy Journal and the HAMB sort of lumbered along for years with just like 30 or 40 people on board. And mostly, it was just people teaching me how to build my car while others honed their shit talking skills. I don't think it was until around 1999 or so that the site/forum really got a critical mass.

But that's it really... I've written this more detailed lots of times. I will look for one of those...

The coupe is still around. Still not finished–might never be. I have been enjoying the two wheeled stuff for sure.

    Ryan hates motorcycles.
