That looks like two halves of the blower case flying off in opposite directions. Violent

Look at the tail end of the flames. The long block appears to be largely intact so that shrapnel is most likely blower parts.

This pic illustrated why NHRA disallowed fuel tanks out front in the "grille". Also the implementation of blower restraints.

Fuel tanks ARE allowed in front of the “grille” provided that they are either inside the frame perimeter or shielded by a 1.25” x .065” tube loop

Dean, this is Joes old altered. Trying to get confirmation from Don long himself. He has seen the pictures, likes what he see, but won't confirm it's one of his. Don said he needs to look at his old records that belong to someone else now. Hope to get a birth certificate from Mr. Long. In the mean time trying to see other altered from that era to make decisions on what to do... Have spoken to Dan Pettinato who has the DiMatteo bros Don Long fuel altered. Dan has made upgrades to race the car. Trying to find out how many Don Long fuel altered that were built. Just getting started on a project that will take some time to finish. I know Joe originally had a Bantam body for it, but it is long gone. Will listen to any and all inputs.

 

As my father likes to say, sometimes ya just gotta go with what works.

Is your goal to have a raceable car?
Or historic static display?
Or replica cackle car?

I would like to respectfully suggest that if you want to race it in competition that you begin with an all new frame, rather than to try to coax that one back to life. You'll be safer, with less time and dollars invested. TIG welding on previously rusty metal has always been problematic for me.

 

Welding should be the least of Mark's problems. He has been a certified welder with his own shop for about 40 years. He welds blown up billet heads and blocks for Brad Anderson, and is the only welder Brad has found that can do it. If Mark wants to weld on that rusty tubing, it will be strong and beautiful.
