Hot Rods ARE RED WHEELS GETTING POPULAR AGAIN?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Jul 11, 2020.

  1. Is there a resurgence in painting the wheels red on a traditional hot rod or custom?

Long before I joined the hamb it was the norm but go back 15 or so years ago red fell out of favor and black seemed to be the new flavor for most of the new builds.

I've had a few hot rods with red wheels, cream wheels & I've also used assorted greens and one car with black wheels.

Do you guy's think red is making a comeback or do you prefer another shade? HRP

Doing the same thing everyone else has already done, over and over again, is tradition.

    So, probably yes.

  3. I like red wheels, and have gone that route in the past..not because of popularity, but simply because I liked the look.
On my convertible I went with black, which I also like (red would contrast with burgundy), plus the black ties in the running boards and top.
I don't get the negativity some people have over wheel color choice..popularly used colors were popular because they look good.
These cars are a personal expression of our taste..be true to yourself.

I think the reason red wheels fell off the map was , like you said HRP 15 or so years ago when the rat rod thing was.....well a big deal every cobbled together, booger welded , spider webbed hunk of junk had red wheels!

so real hot rodders did not want there cars associated with that junk and went away from the red wheels.

with the rat rod scene seaminly dying off, I guess red wheels are ok again.

while used a lot , I still like them on certain rides.

My '35 sedan steel wheels have been red for 20 years, my wife's little truck has "butter yellow" '35 wires.

No red for me. Back in the 70s I saw a pic in Street Rodder of a black 29 Ford Pickup with green wire rims (tire adapters;))...and I was hooked. It seems every rod i've built ends up satin black, and if I'm running caps & rings on it, I'm going green. The 36 Cabriolet (avatar) is getting the same green treatment with wide whites.

    Whadya expect from a guy with a last name like Murphy ??? 1.3.jpg 1.2.jpg 1.4.jpg :D

DSC_0080.JPG IMG_20200704_065838851_HDR.jpg My Dad put the red steelies on the truck, been on there for almost 20 years, had a really nice 50s cruiser look. About a year and a half ago I put the Torque Thrusts on it, and has more of a 60s Hot Rod look.
Have gotten a ton of compliments on the "new" wheels, almost everyone likes it better with the 5 spokes. I love it either way! but a wheel swap can really change the "look" of a Hot Rod!!

Gee, I hope so. I’ve got 4 of these lightly-used “Rubilite Red” ones w/caps for you. 7354DADE-2F91-401C-9E1D-8DFEF1D096C6.jpeg 11AF0DD8-090B-4E09-BEF8-05616C1DB6EE.jpeg Switched to black ‘35’s.

  29. I'm with you Dana, Red & Black always look good together especially when the ride is a traditional car or truck. HRP
