Very likely. There is no direct relationship between the equivalent of dollar valuation and the appreciation of market value of a specific item over time.

Well, given those parameters, I'd buy several (if that was possible then) 1956 Chevrolet's, including a 245 HP, 265, 56 Corvette and swap in a 4 speed, and then a Model 150, Handyman Wagon. Always wanted one of each. Of course, a 40's Willys Coupe would be high on the list also. OR, I'd bribe an admissions panel and get into medical school; my problem is, I hate math, and you have to score high on math. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

$10K in '66, I'd buy every 1962 Belair bubbletop I could find. And not just the 409s, any drive train. Once bitten...:(

I would consider buying 4, 1936 Auburn Roadsters leaving enough to buy a a couple other cars. As far as the 65 Cobra , they sold for around 7500 in 65 , that would leave enough for some other driver . Imagine the value of a mint 65 Cobra with zero miles, you could name your price.

  7. I would buy 100 32 Pines winterfronts. Better yet I would borrow another 5k and buy a new Ferrari 275 gtb.

this question would have better answers if the money aspect were left out.
lots of variables. can we go back more than once to different years? look through your Hot Rod magazine stash and see when your favorite notable cars were being sold. I'd go buy the Ayala/Barris Dan Langdon 1949 Chevrolet, then go buy the Sam Barris Merc from Sam Barris.

wonder if I would have enough left for a 66 427 Corvette?

Trouble with those Cobras is I'd be afraid to take it out in traffic. Back in those days, there was a 40 Packard coupe for sale near where I was working. One of them with the golf clubs door. It looked great, was cheap but completely out of my reach. Later I decided bank robbery might have been justified.

My answer too - 427 SC, or maybe a used Ferrari 250 GT that's worth $7-8 million today.

My Shelby Cobra story. A good friend of my from racing, around 1980 or 81 purchased a 427 roadster, aluminum body, 2x4s, the real deal, believe total production 427 cars was 66 cars, for 8K. What a wicked ride it was, I've only drove/rode in 2 cars on the street that wicked/fast, that Cobra and a another buddy from racing, his Dodge Viper. Paul and I were sitting at a car show in fall, our racing season done with his Cobra and a man kept making offers to buy it and when he hit 12K, Paul sold it, happy with 4K profit, owned it 4 months. As the years passed by and the Cobra's hit 1 million at Barrett Jackson, we all know the story, That's the car he should have kept. so many things from the past, if I only had that magic crystal ball. My deal 0% foresite, 100% hindsight.

  17. I had a '64 409 Bisquit that I gave 1200 for on about '75 or '76. I have certainly owned faster cars since then but it was fun and I would like to own it again. The other 8800 dollars would make for good traveling money. :D

Here's a story that will make you sick, My ex father in law bought a 68 Shelby GT 500 new, my understanding was he never let his kids ride in it , the back seat was never sat in. About a month before I met his daughter, he sold the car for $1200.00. Said it had 31.000 miles . I saw pics so he was telling truth about car. Honestly , he was one on these guys that didn't keep up with values of cars. He was not a hot rodder at all and he really didn't know what he had.

Ferrari 250 GTO. Sold new for $18,000 in '62 so I figure by '65 or '66 you could grab one off the corner lot with a few miles on it and bald tires for a smooth $10k. One sold at BJ recently for $48.4 million so I think I would have made out fine. While I'm at it, Christie Brinkley sitting along side me in the GTO would be a nice add. I'd go Ferris Bueller all over that fantasy. Oh, yeah!
