I’ve been building a 10-1/2 footer for my single seater. I bought 2- 30’ pieces of 2-7/8” well drilling pipe for the frame a $25 dropped trailer axle with six bolt hubs and two pieces of WWII era Marston mat for the runners. My pops had a piece of steel that had been rolled into a ring so I used that to make wells where the front tires will sit. I still need to find something for fenders. Taken in 1971 on my In-laws front lawn.
This is what happens when the car shoots over the front when loading it.

I was a bit shocked ,after looking in my 100s of old race car photos, how few I have showing trailer that I built an have been using from 1960. I guess didn't think on trailer pic's were a deal ever. I towed a lot of cars,a number of class's/types all on the same trailer for a long time. 44.jpg

That has the look of a real deal race car trailer there Dana. The surplus Martson mat runners, open in the middle and bare bones but stout.

I too vote for a Tandem Axel trailer. With the distance, and speeds we tow at today Tandem is a must.
Real Trailer Tires, Brakes, Good lighting. Tandems back-up easier too. A 1600Lb Slingshot looks great on an open single Axel trailer until the trailer busts a tire ...then all Hell brakes loose. I do like Vintage look as well. Here's a few I found on the hamb and other places on the web-a-teria 2.JPG 87.JPG 1968 b ville.jpg mig 6tz show car -n- trailr.jpg

No pictures of my first trailer when I was racing stock cars, and nobody would want to copy it anyway. Built the car and had no way to get it to the track. Hey, I was 16 years old, planning ahead wasn't my strong suite. So I bought the cheapest used trailer I could find. The frame/tracks looked like they came of a car transport trailer which would be alright except somehow somebody had broken it in half right between the axle and welded it back together badly. Four different size worn out tire pointing in four different directions. It was evil. It towed fine up to 50mph, and would be fine at higher speed for a while, but at some unpredictable time it would just snap completely sideways behind you. Very exciting. I was towing it with a stock '50 Chevy pickup, so it wouldn't hardly go that fast anyway but some people I loaned it to had some fun rides in the ditch. Sold it and built a ramp truck, but that's another story.

  17. I'm not gonna deny that a tandem axle trailer with good brakes and lights etc is by far a safer trailer, but I just love the pictures of the old single axle trailers that were built as basic and cheaply as possible (the money and time went into the race cars). And I would love to build one for back road local hauls.

    Rusty rocket......That is looking awesome!

  18. This one seems doesn't seem to be carrying much of the weight on the trailer axles. Alot of weight towards the tongue.

Single axle trailers [Car haulers] should really have a decent torsion axle.
This avoids roll oversteer caused by axle "walk" on leaf springs.

If a builder insists on using leaf springs for a single axle trailer, the shackle/slider should be at the front [NOT the rear] This causes roll understeer which is inherently more stable and will correct itself .

Regardless how traditional the trailer is [or how traditional the built is] Electric drum brakes can be hidden inside the wheels and there is no excuse not to use them [they are dirt cheap]

Whist not exactly a vintage trailer, this served me well for a few years. Overide hydraulic brakes and leaf springs. Towed beautifully at any speed including an accidental 30kph over the limit while my wife was driving. She was overtaking 2 B double trucks and had to get a wriggle on to get past them. After pulling back in I pointed out she'd been doing 85mph and the trailer just went along for the ride.
My point is, keep the design simple but safe and 8 ply tyres as a minimum.

Here is one of the coolest trailer ever made, designed and built by Maynard Stump around 1962 to haul his Indy car that he designed and built him self,it raises and lowers (Packard leveling system) very easy to pull and operate.Lower trailer drive car on raise up and drive off DSCN3573.JPG DSCN3577.JPG DSCN3579.JPG

The trailer is cool but the car is "off-the-chart" incredible.

We made this trailer out of a mobile home frame and PSP (pierced steel planking)
    Used for WW2 runways.
We built it in 1965 and used it to haul our
1954 Chevy from Avon Park Bombing Range to Golden Gate Speedway in Tampa every weekend.
We didn’t have much money, so we used
What we had. same story as most of us baby boomers. IMG_2140.JPG
