Projects Putting metal in doors.

Hello. I am ready to start on my doors. 1933 Chevy. The wood is pretty much gone. Does anybody have any close up pictures of how they replaced the wood with metal. I would like to get some ideas.

I replaced the structural body wood in my '33 ford three window with steel...
made the tubes 3/8" narrower [left-right] than stock, then got some 3/8" hardwood trim from lowes,
drilled and countersunk the wood and then tapped the tubes to 10-32...
countersunk 10-32 screws anchor the wood to the tubes
it will give the upholsterer some wood to nail to... HIH.

Did that in 1991... 14 years before I was forced to take on a computer...

Someone before me replaced the wood in my doors (and A pilar) with metal on my 33 Chevy pickup. I'm in the process of replacing all the rest of the wood structure inside with metal now too. A lot of the truck isn't very HAMB friendly, but I'll snap some photos of the doors tonight after work.

Is yours a truck or a car? I don't know if they are different or not.

 

Funny you should ask this. I just today took some photos of my 34 Chevy door and B post to show another member how I installed Bear Jaw latches without letting them interfere with the Window Glass for his Model A project. I sent the photos in a P.M. Sounds like you could use a peek at the same photo. I hand built everything that had been wood out of 16 gauge Sheetmetal. I put the striker Pin in the Door and the latch in the B Post. This is not a small undertaking!

P.S. I don't think like normal people or follow directions very well.

 

I don't know the interchange of doors but I have a unopened box of replacement wood for a 34 2 door Standard sedan. If that wood kit would do you any good send me a P.M.

 

I did mine in 1965 . No pictures and I was 15 and figured it out. I used square tubing and sheet metal and gas welded it all because my old man got pissed when I burned up his small stick welding rods.
I got metal coat hangers from the truck stop that was next door.

 

Did you eliminate the vent windows? Looks like I might be able to use some of your work as a starting place. Thanks

 

I am pretty sure the doors on my 33 and your 34 are different. Would have to make adjustments to the kit. So maybe someone else could use what you have. Thanks

When this project came to me there were No vent windows at all with it and after searching for 3 years for anything worth working with the decision to do one piece door glass was easy to make. If you would like I can take you better pictures of the Doors. I can tell you this, this was no walk in the park and most that hire me would say my Skill level is better than most. I'll also say I'm not interested in trying to do it again. Once is enough.

I did it on my 29 Murray 4 door. No pictures though, computer crashed and ate them. Just started in and formed every piece. Was time consuming but the outcome was worth it!

 

error404 Did the inside door handle on your truck stay in that location? Looks like it would be just about at the seat back location.

 

I've not moved the handle, that's how it was when I got the truck. Is it normally farther forward?

 

I don't know those trucks in stock form well enough to answer that. It just seems further back than what I would expect and I'm not aware of anything else that has the inside handle actually fastened to the latch in that fashion.

 

I make no claim that this is factory, I wouldn't know. haha

 

I guess it just got my attention due to where it's at. When you think about it inside door handles for the most part are within a comfortable reach zone with the hand closes to the door, more or less just ahead of center on the door. Yours looks like you might have to reach around and back maybe even with your right hand. I was thinking how can you get to it when it appears to be about mid rib cage. I guess as long as it works no big deal, just looked out of place.

 

to be honest, I can't remember how I opened the door when my truck was driving. I think you're right, I probably used my right hand to open it, rather than my left. It didn't seem out of place though. But as cramped as the truck was... it was probably something I just didn't notice, haha!

 

I found some wood in some of the boxes of stuff that came with the car. I don't know if it somebodys kit, or someone handy with woodworking. I put some of it in the doors. I might leave it in if I can make windows to work in the doors.
