This is an Austin A40 but it is the Somerset model as compared with the Devon version that was the more common basis for a gasser. There were a little larger in all dimensions.

Very nice closed top steel body Fiat. Kind of rare in the US.

 

Rare anywhere. I,ve had about 15 original steel Topolino,s in the last 25 years. About 6 of those were hardtop coupe and those 6 were actually Simca 5.

Wow - look at all that weight on the front axle.
Not going to mention the duct tape and hose clamp. OK I did.

 

you should know we called duct tape 200 mph tape back in the day.

 

Willie must have gone for a wild ride, notice both hands on the wheel.
Edit just noticed one hand on the brake handle.

 

The current re-pop of the Wing has even more weight on the front axle.

Well, the body of the Stone "T" is in the paint shop and looking good. Funny thing is I didn't take a camera with me the last time I viewed the chassis, which is about 95% complete. So here is my latest up date. Last photo, unknown photographer, maybe Frank Graf.

 

Dean Turk's effort to keep his street coupe altered-legal, as the chopped top exceeded the limits. Dean would later run top fuel with a Pontiac-powered dragster...from Arizona

 

Archie Ary's "Archie's Flying Saucer" at Inyokern. Because of the chop, someone said it looked like a flying saucer and the name stuck. Archie ran a garage in Colton CA and later ran top fuel cars.

 

Once upon a time you could field a competitive T/F car out of a small repair shop. Glad I was there in the "Golden Age".

 

I have a Simca 5 with the fold back top, nearly complete and original.

 

The guy in the blue shirt, resembles George Kennedy.

 

Asked Mikio about this fella. Unknown person, but seems to be in a few of the photos...

 

Jim Travers fuel roadster, later bought and run by Fred Larsen.


Bill Butters, when topless altereds were "Hot Roadsters," thus "B/H" in the wheelwell, from the American HJot Rod Foundation. Bill later ran a successful series of fuel dragsters.


Ewell & Stecker, from the Jack Stecker collection scanned by Manuel Maldonado. This coupe ran a fuel Dodge with a front-mounted blower.


Boudakian Brothers '37 Ford Coupe, Norm Grudem photo. They later raced a series of altereds and roadsters.


Joe Koper's roadster at Pomona...this ran over 140 with a fuel Chrysler, setting a bunch of track records. Joe later died in a crash at Lions in the former Fritz Voigt dragster, then owned by Watson and Callahan. Norm Grudem photo.

This thread is over 100 pages (good!), so I can't say that some of these photos have appeared before. But I wanted to share some earlier altereds ---

 

Dave, could the Ewell & Stecker coupe be the car that Jim Miles later ran?

It could have been, Jim ran a chopped coupe, but he certainly could have chopped it after he bought it...anyone else?
