I like how crisp the B&W footage is. And while I'd love to hear any of those cars running, the corvair with the trumpet exhaust would be quite entertaining.
The color video is footage of Art Arfons testing his "Green Monster" jet car: It was shot September 29th 1965 ... 32 days after the 17th Annual Bonneville National Speed Trials had ended (on August 28th) ... and 39 days before Arfons set the new land-speed record at 576.553 MPH (on November 7th). NOTE: Although I appreciate thrust-powered land-speed vehicles, I don't consider them to be "Traditional Hot Rods" and therefore, they're probably not an appropriate topic for discussion on the H.A.M.B. forum.
I don’t know, first one kind of a waste of time, but second one pretty cool. Aerial shots are nice. Always great to time travel.
The black & white video is footage shot at the 16th Annual Bonneville National Speed Trials (August 23 - 29, 1964). Awesome! Love the cutting room floor stuff and glad to view every frame that survived. Great stills and info Hemi32-Thank you! The Johnson/Lasallette 55 Chevy reminds me of the Ed Roth 55, what with it's radiused wheelwells and hood scoop.
VS Hello, Nice finds of those movies. Perhaps the final managing editor decided that those little things zipping across the screen were just not for most people to take notice and be interested. The second film had better close up shots that created more interest. Yes, Bonneville photography of racing is a long way away on the salt. But perhaps, they could have used this set up for clarity? Jnaki Not only is that a large format film camera to bring the best clarity of any still photo versus a 35mm camera, but look at that artillery in the front, mounted on that extra heavy-duty tripod. It looks like the Camp Pendleton Marines on one of their weekly, long distance 55mm Howitzer shooting exercises. Not only being mobile with the Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler wagon, but the station wagon could be far enough away and still get the clear, larger photos we all like to see of the “speed” from the race cars. Talk about clarity and bringing those "little ants" of race cars into the world, as almost life size… Whoo whoooo. Who else but world famous, Life Magazine, home to some amazing photo collections from all of those years, a long time ago. That long range large format camera and lens system would cost as much as running a small county for a year or two!!! Ha! If Hot Rod Magazine’s Bob D’Olivio was asked, he would have had some extra help…big film and a big zoom.
