What steering box to use for cowl steering???

Model A tudor with 6" step and the body is not channeled. My question was what steering box you guys used, and with what sucsess??

Profile sprint car box.....Keep the pitman arm short to slow it down, and the older one's are slower usually than the newer one's

I am in process of building a 2:1 halfing gear for the midget box (all sprint car boxes are too quick for street IMHO. (8:1) should have prototype done mid aug for modified T project, (body narrowed 6") should be cool. Ill update when its done if you stay in touch.

 

I have one of those for sale. It's the older cast iron version.

The same early Mustang used by '70s street rodders ?
They were mounted with the pitman arm up,
also known as "side steer".

For cowl steering you want the pitman arm down.

 

60s Mopar non-power. It's aluminum and doesn't need to be reversed. Here's one for fifty bucks plus $35 for shipping.

I'm planning to use a 40 Chevy box too, but not as a cowl steering setup. You happy with yours? I'm a little concerned it might be too slow of ratio, but with no power assist how quick could it be anyway?

Anyone know if there is a major difference between 40 & 41 Chevy steering boxes? I just got a freebee '41 box/column assembly.

 

So here's what I did.....Bought the Shroeder and used it for about a thousand miles. It looks bitchin', but the ratio (8:1) is a tad fast for the street. Not to mention the work out on the arms at low speed. I came across lionsgarage article that he submitted last December. I just this week brought home his version of the reducer (quickner upside down) It reduces effort 2:1 and is a bolt on to the Schroeder box. Looks beautiful too. Give Butch a shout.

I second that. I think it's used in 66-70 Dodges. I'm using one, works great.

 

Maybe someone can do a comparison post,
between the BMW 2002 and Mopar boxes ?

Overall size,offset for input to output,length of stock pitman arm,ratio,etc.

When my sixties Mopar box gets to me (about a week) I'll measure it up and figure out the ratio, etc.

 

I think the Mopar box is pretty bulky,compared to the BMW 2002,or the Volvo.

But the Mopar box is easier to find.

 

Check out sprint car and midget power steering units...
They can be had in many ratios and the ratio can be fine tuned with the pitman arm.(multi holes)
NBC and KSE are 2 brands...There are many more.

 

Check the ratio before springing bucks for a Sprint car box.

Street boxes tend to be a lot slower ratio.

 

Dumb question, but what year "Volvo"........there is a guy in KC that is a VOLVO nut and lives around the corner from us..........hmmm........maybe dig thru his parts pile.
