History 1933 - 1936 Willys, picture thread

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by WillysRule, Dec 5, 2010.

  1. I'm glad to see my name mentioned here. I sold all of my Willys bodies, sheet metal and parts when I went through a tough divorce in 1992. I still had my 2 sons, and the house. Life has priorities. I can not replace what I had unfortunately. But at 79 years old, a triple bypass in 2000, a double bypass in 2011, and now on kidney dialysis 3 days a week, I still get around and do what I can. I may be a little slower, and get tired easier, but so what, I am still here. My mind says that I am 35 years old, but my body tells me otherwise.

What's going on with that front suspension? It wouldn't be a <GASP!> leaf spring suspended IFS would it?

  10. If that 1933 Willys is the last one that Chuck Finders built about 16 years ago, It was a coupe body that he got from me. The car came from Rhode Island. It was owned by a little old lady whose father bought it for her in 1933. I tried for years to buy the coupe, and was only able to buy it from her estate after she passed away. The coupe sat in the same falling down garage for many years. the roof had mostly fallen in, too. I took the coupe home to Connecticut on a single axle, un-sprung trailer. when I got to the car wash, most of the rusty parts were gone, scattered along the way. It was a straight body, one owner car.

  14. I am pretty sure that the original Dark Horse Willys 77 SWC coupe (later rebuilt into Finder's Traveler) was a '35/'36, not a '33. That is based on the door handles being the stubby later style and not the swoopy early ones.

That is Jack Merkel in his steel 33 Willys running SWC. Doug beat Jack on this run but the run prior to this Merkel beat Montgomery and right after that Montgomery got the Ford Cammer. I think this was the 66 or 67 Indy Nationals. Merkel vs Montgomary.jpg

Just going to random photo sites I find A LOT more 1937-1942 Willys shots. The earlier ones are way harder to find.

LB this one has been around a long time. Can't remember the name on the side, I tried looking up "Paddy Wagon" but came up empty. The "Dog Catcher" was a yellow one Ferrill and Kieth I think. Also the black one was probably redone because it has those fax 12 spoke front wheels. The original version did not.

Here is my '33 coupe here in New Zealand. I bought the car 30 years ago with the intention of building a near period perfect Gasser. I'm still working on it. I'm at the stage of trying to find woodwork, trunk hinges & handle and rear window garnishes. Impossible to find in NZ.
    It's running a 392 Hemi with tall Hilborn 4 port & GMC blower. '60 Olds rear. 1.jpg 4.jpg 7.jpg 67.jpg 99.jpg Hemi mockup (2).jpg

While going through a ton of magazines that I'm throwing out, I came across some that where special. This one in particular"Street Rodder Collector's" spring 1982. I just moved out to Flagstaff AZ the summer of 81 and went back to visit NY with our newborn son. My friends in Vintage Tin took me out to dinner and gave me the magazine. I sold the 36 Willys sedan to Eric Botha from Kenosha Wisconsin he put an Opel front end in it and the wire wheels. I sure do miss that car.

LB you right but they are fun, I had a blast in mine. Also if you look at the grille it says "The James Boys" I know of a 4dr. race car called "James Gang" it was green. I wonder if this is before the green car?

  29. Pat,
it was always the James Boys not gang. Here's a picture of the car, they were out of Ottawa, Canada. I believe the car was sold a few years back. 20200927_114845.jpg
