I had to drive right into a hurricane to save it once.
When I was helping a friend move (late 70s? early 80s?), towing a large trailer overloaded with furniture tied on everywhere, Beverly Hillbilly style, I was on a highway and met a town parade head-on and the crowds were blocking all the side streets, so I couldn't turn away and escape....
met the parade head-on before a barricade could be moved to let me out.
Who puts a parade on a state highway?????
After owning it and hotrodding it for many years, I sold it at the big Chicago car show sometime around 1988 1989. It went to Ohio as a present for someone's daughter going off to college.
Miss that odd car.

Studebaker trucks were classy. Maybe it was a closer link to their wagon building.

 

Here’s my ‘55. Spent its life on a ranch in Montana. I rebuilt the complete chassis and reworked the interior and left the body alone. Snatched the 224” V8 and big-truck 4 speed and built up a .060 over 289” and put a 3 speed OD behind it with a 3.54 rear gear. It’s a handful.

 

Those trucks always remind me of the citizens of "Who Ville" in the Grinch movie.

Before the world wide “locked in place” happened, we were researching old Craftsman houses for neat ideas. Our family’s first real house was an old Craftsman house built on a huge lot on the Western edge of the city of Long Beach. It was the only house and location that we could afford. This was in 1948. Behind us was a giant empty, grassy, lonely field that went to the very edge of the Terminal Island Freeway. We could see the cars and trucks that went into Terminal Island and beyond from our backyard fence.

The idea that those Craftsman houses presented a design that could be incorporated into the more modern homes as architectural accents. While researching for these ideas, I came across this unusual photo of a house in Lakewood, CA. It was in an area noted for Craftsman style and design. But, on the driveway, was the most unusual vehicle.

In what looks like a 1949-53 Studebaker Truck was neatly parked in the driveway. But, it was not just a stock appearing truck. It was customized with several drastic changes made to the stock design. Not only was the front grille changed with the addition of a bullet style nose, but it looked chopped.

Upon gazing a little more, the overall height of the truck cabin was too low to be stock or even with a chopped top. It had to be sectioned, too. The hood has been given the sectioned treatment and because of the body modifications, that porch chair is larger than the truck door opening. That is how low this Studebaker truck sits and/or is driven around So Cal.

So, who in the Lakewood, CA neighborhood has seen this truck and can give us more information? It isn’t every day that we see a chopped, sectioned, lowered and modified Studebaker truck on the streets of So Cal or for that matter, anywhere.

A Craftsman House search provided an unusual Studebaker Truck parked in the driveway.

That custom Studebaker Truck parked in the old Craftsman House in Lakewood, CA is very unusual. So, in further research, this photo popped up in a Studebaker thread and one person mentioned seeing it at the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show. Is this the same Studebaker Truck? There are a lot of similarities in both photos.

The Appletons look the same. There are two portholes in the hood. There is a little chrome trim over the center bullet grille. Also, there are wiper nubs but no blades. In the found photo, the headlights look like a non-stock seal beam, but high powered, high intensity lamp. In the Craftsman House photo, the headlight mirror reflector can be seen through the bushes. The stance, looks very low in both photos.

The Studebaker, primered truck just seems like the same truck in the Craftsman House photo painted differently. It was just one of those things that kept nagging for more research. Does anyone have a bunch of photos from the 2010 Grand National Roadster Show, either inside or outside? If the Studebaker truck is in that batch of photos, please post them.

There can't be two, custom, Studebaker Trucks with pretty similar looks and stance in So Cal. So, is it the same truck? What are the details?

I guess you're right, photographic proof is hard to refute.

 

How about a "Packardbaker"? 1957 Clipper, and I only shared it because it's SUPERCHARGED


In the final death throws of Packard they were essentially Studebakers, but all the Clippers were supercharged. I wouldn't call it "pretty" overall but it gets a pass since there's a blower in there, right?
