    From the BillyBob Shop log

June 4th 2020 Filler and block sanding the back bottom of the cab. Three applications of mud and sanding with 36 and 40 grit. I wear a dust mask and goggles but as little as a half hour of these ops and I'm sneezin' and drippin' for a few hours, one of the reasons I think "the new normal" of wearing masks in public is mostly symbolic at best.

Not enuf defects to mix up another batch so I applied some Bondo brand spot putty I had layin' around and sanded everything again with 80 grit.

Washed the back bottom with Dawn soap and water, masked and roughed up the door jambs and cab corner bottoms with a Scotchbrite pad and PRE Paint prepped the same, then spray bombed them.

We're ready now for priming the bare metal patches and rolling the first guide coats. Background music was The Moody Blues Time Traveler box set.

My new harmonic balancer showed up. Went through two tools to get that bugger on and the only progress I made with it was using a rubber mallet

  5. Dropped my Fairlane off at a buddies muffler shop for some new mufflers and a tailpipe after trying to drag the exhaust off recently. Planning on mufflers that will gain me some ground clearance. :D Also, cleaned up a couple exhaust manifolds that I will paint and then put on to replace the two broken ones on it now. Yea...it was sounding bad.

Painting the firewall on the A pickup. I had already done all the sanding and primering, and layed down a coat of shiney black from a Rustoleum rattle can, but ended up with a couple of little runs. Probably nobody would've noticed them, but I knew they were there and threy bugged me, so I sanded them down and tried to hit them with some more of the shiney stuff, and all it did was krinkle up. Damn! I even waited the recommended 48 hours. So yesterday I sanded it all back down again and resprayed it with some primer. Going to sand that down with some 800 today and try the shiney black stuff again, and hope for no runs this time. 20200604_090104_HDR.jpg

You have to search far and wide to find worse spray bomb nozzles than Rustoleum. Why they can't have reliable nozzles like Duplicolor I can't fathom.

  13. Ran a few wires down thru the drivers side rocker on my '47. Got a start on adding some firewall insulation; but had to use contact cement; seems the 40 some year old 3M aircraft stuff's "peel & stick" was not very sticky anymore.

  14. Cleaned up the Ranch Wagon & got the air working better ( belt was slipping)

I will be driving the wagon to Greenville tomorrow to be a pallbearer for a fellow Try-City Rod & Custom club member, Andy's wife pleaded with the funeral home to have a procession to the cemetery and they will only allow the pallbearers to follow the hearse, It's a shame this Dammed pandemic has affected people even in death.

I have room in the back to haul the wreath from the club.HRP

Replaced the auto trans fill tube after I found Larry’s T-Bird had a replacement with dip stick. Mine had been leaking for 7 years and everything I tried failed. Leak is gone. Never could figure it out. A soft copper gasket would have been my last resort before I found the repo.

I got the firewall painted up this morning. Yesterday after work I sanded the primer I had sprayed the day before, but there was a front blowing in and too much wind to try to spray some paint. This morning it was too cold and too wet to paint it, but around 10:00 the temp was up enough and humidity down to <80% so I went ahead and sprayed it and it came out nice. Check 1 more thing off the to-do list. Now I need some chrome hardware to mount the ignition coil. Tomorrows project. That and clean things up again that have gotten dusty from all the sanding. And take it out for a ride. 20200605_181059.jpg

Moved some stuff around in the basement and found a quart of paint remover. Brush and the old can with the opened side was right next to it. Hupmobile splash aprons are in bare steel first time since 1911, and the rear well on the Roadster left quarter is also bare. Always nice to see old red Ford primer on A parts. Bob :)

  22. Cleaned up the mess from doing the engine and set the frame up level on the hoist to start installing the running gear and rebuilding the front and rear suspension for the 56 wagon. I wanted a stay busy project until things open up again and this one sure fit the bill. Things are actually coming together good for what I have on hand to work with, didn't know I had enough stuff stashed to build a whole car out of.

  23. Did some stuff in the shop for my son, then took a look at the ratchet I blew apart in the driveway on Thursday while it was being over-taxed. I picked up the pieces I could find, and was a bit sad. Got the ratchet in a set from my parents when I was 16. It was a Christmas present. Well, I was able to clean it, and re-assemble and it works good now. Made me feel better, than the other day. Parents are gone, that was 46 years I'd had it.

Continued with the 5sp swap. Box is where it needs to be, clutch seems to work smoothly but more work needed to tie in the cross member. Oh and the driveshaft is being lengthened. A lot more work than I thought it would be. If you'd have asked me again before I started I'd have gone for a toploader + Gear Vendors overdrive...

Maybe it's Ford's way of getting back at you for putting that GM boat anchor in there;)

Yep I also have some of the original pieces of a Montgomery Wards Powercraft socket set my parents bought me for Christmas when I was 16. I know what you mean. When you have something that long it becomes special. One funny thing I remember from back then was my friends parents bought him a cheap socket set for Christmas. He and I went to change the starter on his Buick Skylark and the 9/16" socket rounded out immediately when trying to remove the first starter bolt!! Good times....
