Another cool Paul project -- Thanks for taking the time to share this!

 

I think maybe in a way you already are.

 

made some lower shock mounts for the rear.
cut and reshaped a bit of rectangular tube to fit on the back of the ends of some after market tube shock conversion mounts,
cut the ends and pie cut them,
made a cardboard pattern to guestimate the bend needed
welded the pie cut
ground them smooth-ish,
fit them,
and tacked them in place.

the rear is now ready to come out to get all brackets welded.

 

this is just a filler post,
like, how many times do we need to see mundane shit like this anyway?..

I didn't feel like pulling the rear today
so I drilled some holes.
did a quick layout on the front backing plates
followed by center punch,
1/8" pilot,
5/16" final hole size,
used a 1/2" bit to clean up the burs inside,
regular counter sink chamfer on the outside,
minor clean up and temporary fit to check the look
passenger side and driver side

 

that will do but,
I may use scoops instead,
on another set of 'plates

 

I like the scoops, I have a pair on my truck.

Are you planning on chrome for the front axle?

 

I like the scoops too.

If I was a rich man I would chrome everything.
But alas...
Paint will have to do for now.

The car is really looking great! Are the radius rod joints the early Ford 11/16 ones? What's the distance between the top and bottom radius arm joints at the front axle brackets?

 

yes, 11/16"-18 R&L tube steel tie rods, 6-1/2" center-center

 

side tracked again,
spent way too much time on non-critical path design aspect..

made a simple jig for the bead roller

 

layout path for bead..
simple line layout and hole drilled in sheet metal,
roll bead until hole in sheet line up with hole in jig,
drop 1/4" bolt through holes,
roll radius around to line up with straight line,
pull bolt and roll straight to edge,
cut between the beads and around inside radius,
fold the inside cuts and weld an arch to close off the radius

notch the turtle deck to clear upper shock mount
tack weld temporary tabs to frame to support turtle deck
check notch fit

 

layout for patch

 

cut turtle deck to take the patch
trim patch to fit
clamp the patch in place
and weld it up

 

Detail on that notch is great!

grind down the welds
and check fit

 

I raised the turtle deck 1-1/4"
to expose the same frame reveal as the body will have
mostly to try to gain some room for the gas tank
but still trying to keep it low as possible for visual aesthetics

Thanks for the tie rod end info! That beadwork in the last few posts is fantastic! It's the details like that which really make the car.
