Projects Time to redo my daily driver.

12 years ago I put this truck together to be my daily.

Well 185,000 miles later the road salt has eaten up the body pretty bad.. so this Friday I drove it over to my shop to teardown to replace / redo the body... i have been picking up some pretty nice parts of it over the past 12 years so it sould be a pretty nice truck when I get it back together.

I was quite happy to find that frame held up great... I dont have to weld or repair anything on the frame... just gotta clean up and repaint that.

 

That was all the teardown I got done this weekend..

Here are some of the good parts I started prepping to go on the truck.. I only plan to reuse the hood, grill latch pannel and drivers running board....

Got a bunch done... the springs redone, and frame stripped, wire wheeled ground and painted.

 

quite an achievement, 185k, id buy the beer if i were there. being in the salt belt myself i would never do that to my clean old pickup, but you are paying the price and you will get many more miles from it again. great story, but i gotta disagree on the NDT tires, look cool but really-they suck in mud or snow. i was a big WW2 collector guy years ago had many dodge wc's, and halftracks and jeeps. NDT tire's suck, are expensive, wear badly on pavement, make noise like hell, but look cool. keep on trucking, glad you are giving it "round 2"

 

I find that they work pretty well.. or maybe I am used to them... I usually get around 12,000-16,000 miles per set of them. So yes I have gone though a bunch... but do like them.

I used to rock crawl and have used the truck on the rocks and in mud and never had any gripes about performance.



I would love to get a halftrack at some point..

I have a 42 ford gpw and 55 m38a1 right now.

 

One of my favorite trucks here. I would love to do a similar theme with a 57 Dodge.

Is that a Marmom Herrington..??..spelled wrong probably. I had a rust free MH 1951 Ford morning in pieces but sold the project to help buy another project. Totally regret doing that

 

I wish it was I tried to find one so I built my own conversion axle and used a Dana 20 transfercase from a 1966 bronco.

Managed to finish all the bodywork and blocking on the cab... gotta sand the primer once it cures and shoot it with paint.

I got the hood pretty far along .. it needs a bit more work but is getting there.

 

Wow that is a lot of miles!! Really cool. Is that a 300 6? Love your truck.

 

It is a 200 inline six. That I built with flattop pistons and a performance cam. Runs quite well.

I was originally pondering a 300 but it was a tad too long.

I narrowed a Dana 44 and used chevy knuckles to retain the stock steering setup with Ford hubs to retain the stock rims.

 

I was going to change the paint scheme but my daughters (11 and 7) insisted it stays green and black.... however I am going shiney and using a bit darker green

 

I started blocking the cab the final time and found it was Not my final time..... so I fixed the tiny low spots...and primed again those spots....and sprayed a guide coat on it.... so hopefully this week I will paint the cab.

 

Always liked your truck and the fact it is used and driven a lot. I remember your original build. Good on the rebuilding, it seems some of your parts are not so bad, although having better replacements is a good way to make the job easier.

 

How many miles on that poor little ol 200?

I have a LOT of miles on this 200... but have rebuilt it... and it is not the engine I originally started with.... I scrapped that one...

So. Technically i got those mileage speed between 2 junk yard motors and a current rebuild on one of those!!! So not bad really.

I finally got the cab painted AND put it on the frame by myself.... fun fun....

The hood is about ready for paint...... and I have been priming the bed parts......and got the inside of the tailgate sprayed.

 

I wasn't happy with the back of the cab so I resprayed it.. and sprayed the hood.

 

Wow...super job on that old truck...glad to see some guys in the North Eastern part of the country still driving these old trucks on a daily basis...I am envious for sure...

Love the old flat fenders too...

Got more sprayed today. An the bedsides in final primer... I also enlisted the help of my wife to put the hood on..

I am slowly running out of stuff to spray green which is a good thing...then will be the black fenders and running boards.
