Bill Hines did the folding top mechanism for Steve Lininger's beautiful Shoebox Ford.
(Note the signature Joe Bailon grille work.)

All these cars look great. The blue Shoebox is fantastic.
For me a Hot Rods first duty is function.
A Customs first duty is the look. Pleasing to its owner.
    Nothing beats a Carson.
So this one will get one fairly soon after a few other details are sorted.

I love the functional top that Rob Ida did on this '50 Mercury convertible.

(it has a McCullough blown flathead, too.)

I’m halfway through the build of my custom Packard and the Brain power required to engineer it to all fold away is immense. I used the roof mech from a Saab aero which has a pleasing flow. 40B91BE8-9980-4A9A-BA45-020942710C73.jpeg 787C3A2E-8B67-4391-974A-7A911DA07A44.jpeg 08AB0CEE-2258-452C-B2C3-DA7BB799D456.jpeg C54638B3-C13E-41E7-A720-8B31B56E3B0C.jpeg

When we started this build, Don and I agreed that it would be neat to do a folding top. After he chopped a real folding top, he changed his mind. Knowing how challenging it was to get this "Carson-type" top right, I think it was the right decision -- to build a folding top that had this exact shape would have been a real feat. From the rear:

  20. Thanks, The guy that chopped & painted the car didn't get it right. I found a book at Borders on chopping a 41' convertible and re did it myself!
