Hey guys, I have been running a mallory YL series dual point ignition in my flat motor since 1992. Was bought new then. I recently picked up another last year at a swap meet. I am building a second motor. I try to put the distributor in an iron timing cover without the lower support and it bottoms out before you can clamp it. I put it in an aluminum merc cover with the lower support just like I'm running on my other motor and it wont fit in the upper hole! So I went and looked at the part numbers and the distributor in my running motor is the standard 2527501. The swap meet distributor is 2527502H. I havent found any information on this number. Obviously it is different. Anyone have the details on it? Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
In the third photo it looks like a radius ground on the end of the shaft would let the distributor drop far enough to rest on the clamp area. Grind it a bit and see if that does it. You want some clearance so the gear is not pressing up on the distributor housing.
Yup, I was going to do that but wanted to use an aluminum cover like I am using with the mallory on my other moyor. Then I hit a snag that this distributor wont fit in the aluminum cover. Never heard of such a thing! Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I will be following this. My son started to install my rebuilt Mallory into my 53 Ford V8 with no luck. Said it was too big a diameter and too long. I’m not exactly sure what was wrong, but I’m at a point where I need to install it.
According to the 76 catalog, number difference only indicates a different advance curve. Couldn't find anything about the "H" at the end.
Is your aluminum timing cover the same # as the one mentioned in the bullet points of this Mallory dual point add. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Mall...9-53-Flathead-Dual-Point-Distributor,531.html
I have put a bunch of Mallory's into flatheads and have never seen this problem, (I usually like to use "flattops", though.) You don't suppose Speedway had a bunch of distributors made up that would only fit their proprietary timing cover. It is Speedway, after all.
My cover is a canadian 8ba cover. Original ford part. Not whatever that conversion cover setup is Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Does anyone have the sketch of the distributor dimensions used to convert a sbc distributor to flathead? I cant seem to find it now. I would like to see how it matches up to what I have Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Ok... little time with some sand paper on the ID of the cover and it starting going in... just a tight fit I guess! Still need to figure out what the 02H curve is though Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
So, I sent mallory a tech support to find more info on this distributor and had no luck. mallory had a list of common curves on their old/new part number scheme that 24riverview posted earlier. I have seen that sheet before but I haven't ever seen a breakdown of what the curves are?? anyone know??
