Technical What is the angle of your nuts ?

Now that I have your attention, I want to know what the proper seating angle would be for lug nuts for steel wheels like my WV Gennie 14 series.

I see 45 and 60 degrees listed.

What is the correct seating angle for steel wheels?

 

Stock lug nuts, perhaps?

(which seem to be 60. 45 degree nuts are oversized and used in a few specific applications)

 

Right nut or left nut, one is lower than the other!

Thats what I thought, I don’t have any stock ones to look at.
I bought a set at Princess auto and I think they’re just for trailer wheels.
They’re probably 60 degrees, but I think they’re of questionable quality.

Once I wake up I’ll go check one out

I had one seize up yesterday, it was horribly galled and wouldn’t come off until I cut it off destroying a stud too. (One of these on my Winters QC which of course aren’t available locally)




Brand new studs and nuts, first time they had been torqued.

The Mechanic who did my inspection torqued them, once I got home I wanted to pull the wheels off to adjust the brakes

 

Nope, not gonna touch on that...but maybe I could get the wife to...…..

So to add to the debate, do you lube your nuts?
I have to wonder if a little never seize would have prevented the galling that caused my problem in the first place.

I know there are 2 schools of thought on that.

 

I always use anti seize, you are supposed to ajust your torque value down to compensate for the lubricant. Most torque charts give the appropriate values.

Larry, I strongly advise against using anything on your nuts.. Get quality lug nuts and you shouldn’t ever have a problem.

I use bees wax on my nuts so they don't rust!

Me too. I have the cheap copy, they have them in stock at the builder supply. But I do have a bunch of other Starrett tools.

 

They do? There sure is all kinds of screeching boilerplate about lugnuts, usually bold print, lots of exclamation points and portents of impending doom.

My old Ford shop manual specifies the lug nut torque is for lubricated threads. That went bye-bye somewhere along the way. Too many gorillas with an impact wrench I guess.

 

There's no angle to mine, can't really say though.....haven't seen them in years. Let me go out to the shop and check, be right back.....yep, still there.

 

Ok I can’t help it, hopefully I don’t get Larry’s thread closed, being as I went and got neutered on Thursday I could help but laugh when I first saw this thread!

I was referring to a general chart, one that list torque by fastener size and thread pitch.

I put oil on the wheel nut threads and never-seize on the chamfer surfaces.
I also put oil on my con rod nuts and main bearing cap bolts, and they haven't fallen off yet.

 

I went out to the local self serve auto parts yard this morning and scoured around the full sized Ford Crown Victorias.

Managed to find 30 lug nuts that on examination are OEM.

Leaving the yard with them in a clear plastic cup that I grabbed from one of the cars they charged me a whole $2

Got home with them and the quality difference is really obvious.

Threading a Chinese one from princess auto onto the stud you can grab hold of it and it has some movement like a little wiggle indicating excessive thread oversize.

Threading on a OEM Ford lug nut and it fits nice and smooth and no excess thread clearance. Way better fit.

Nice quality and yes 60 degrees.

A little cleanup in the tumbler will do the trick.

 

also note, the oem nuts are not threaded all the way thru, instead missing a few threads on the bottom in case some of the stud with no threads is too high.

 

My wife measured and rubbed oils on my nuts to keep them clean. No more squeaks. Easier to handle and turn and twist.






She knows how to work on cars.
