Folks Of Interest Sun Tach transmitter EB series rebuild

Need some help locating a company called RT engineering who makes a circuit board to replace the inside parts and batteries in the EB transmitters. Googled and called the RT company that show up when I googled and the lady said they were not that company but she had received lot of called about it. Can anyone shed some lite on this, all I want to do is make my Sun Tach work, I'm not restoring the car to original, in fact it's going to be a gasser without a straight axle, just bigger springs and spacers, with ball joint spacers.

I just sent a sun RC 85 tach to Bob’s Speedometer to have the transmitter box bypass done. Not sure if that will help you out. Apparently they can bypass it so you don’t need the box.

If I remember correctly the company who was selling the replacement circuit board was somewhere in Texas.

 

If all else fails, get in touch with me. We have a prototype of a board that fits in a Sun transmitter box and drives the original Sun head.

The only problem is that ours is for a 6 volt positive ground vehicle. (Doing it for a 12 volt negative ground vehicle is much easier; we just haven't done it yet.)

 

What Treb11 says. They have done all of my work and it is top notch.

I have converted these with ZENER diodes.....not a difficult effort. There are a couple of internet articles that show you how to do it. The cost is about $2.00. I have one done by Williamson also....they cover their work with epoxy so you cannot reverse engineer it.

 

I am interested in this also.

 

I have two of their boards and the info at my Hobby Shop. If I can remember I will get it and post tomorrow.

 

I didn't know Bob's Speedo did them. I need to reach out and get a quote. I'm sure Williamsons does great work but they gave me a quote I couldn't swallow.

 

@hightower611 Looks awesome and super cheap but I can't find anything about Texas Retro Sports. Looks like that was from 2016?

 

Can you provide some more detail on what you did? I'm starting to think that we may have over-complicated this. A simple, cheap, "elegant" solution sure would be welcome.

 

I found them years ago on FB. Their most recent post was January. I don't know anything else about them. I also need to do something so I will watch this thread.

Dang if I don't have a 6 volt from my paper route 1955 Studebaker Commander

 

As you probably know, we offer a converter box that allows 12 volt negative ground tachs to be run on 6 volt positive ground vehicles. Someone gave us a Sun tach and controller box that was a complete mess. We converted it just to see if we could. Here's a video of it running in my '51 Ford. .

(My partner is an electronical genius.)

We can do that. I am really interested in what "hotrodart" has to contribute. If he's got a "magic bullet", our conventional approach may be over-kill.

There is a company called Technoversions that make a product called TachMatch that replaces the sun transmitter box for an old sun tach running on 12 volts.

First off let me say thank you for the input. I spoke with the guys at Williamson company, and yes they are a little high on their quote, but for what he does and the warranty I will probably have them do the work for me. I want too keep the look and have a working product. Seems like a lot of these companies come and go, Williamson have a good website and as he told me he likes to check the head and needle also. So for the buck I think that is the way to go. Just buying a part and installing it may not solve the problem. Well it's up to each person's choice on how to spend their money, but I want a working product.

 

I will vouch for technoversions, they have an excellent product and great customer service.

 

38 2 DR they also installed a new RPM face in mine. It had a 10 grand face and I wanted a 8G face. It came back like brand new I never regretted spending the money.

Yep, still works. I did this years ago and it was cheap to build, most parts are a couple of bucks and you get 5 or more items for that price. (so you can build more than one)Very easy to put together and has been working for years.

 

Did lots of reading on the subject when I was planning the restoration of my sun tach. From everything that I read and heard chatting to a couple guys that had experience both the transmitter and tach should be reworked. Usually there are issues with the tach itself as well. My model of tach doesn’t actually need the transmitter although when I bought it the guy had a transmitter as well so I have one. I called Williamson and emailed them and I never got a response. Found a guy in Saskatchewan who rebuilds gauges. Chatted with him, sent him pics of the tach and then sent him the unit. I wanted it rebuilt internally but left OG on the outside for the old look. He upgrades all the internals to work with new electronic ignition as I have a Pertronix set up on my 409. Works perfect and has good response. Can’t beat the look of a Sun!!

I now remember why we didn't get into this business. It was because of this unit (or one like it). Anyone with a modicum of electrical knowledge could build one for a lot less than we could have sold them for. The only factor preventing this is that a lot of people are completely overwhelmed by all things electrical and wouldn't even attempt it, even though they could probably do it.

Kudos to you Mr. "46international"; good job. The only problem I see is sourcing the components now that Radio Shack is gone. Maybe one of the big electronics distributors like Digi-Key or Mouser? It will probably be cheaper too.
