Technical trans dipstick question.

ive newly built 700r4 trans (low miles sofar) fresh oil red colour new dipstick with chrome stick .its very difficult to see clean red fluid on the stick.does anyone do a dipstick that's readable with clean fluid.i am considering having the dipstick powdercoated matt black but my head says don't do it.help

 

I've encountered this issue with my trans dipstick also. I invert the stick and watch for the oil to run down. Doing it this way makes it easy to see where the oil level is on the stick.

 

I think the solution is a matt black finish on the bottom few inches with a crosshatch finish between the hi and low levels some body must make one .or is a case that very few are concerned about such trivia once the trans is shifting ok?

 

Wouldn't the red fade into the black? Maybe yellow, white, orange something like that.
Other than that, I don't know.

 

Scotch-Brite Pad the shit out of the tip.

 

or something more serious than scotch brite, like a coarse sanding disk.

I'd get an OEM dipstick and tube, if possible....they work pretty darn well. If you can'd find one, get a used dipstick from something modern that is longer, and cut it to match.

Hopefully it’s not one of the aftermarket chrome dipsticks that flake after a while. I wouldn’t speed up the process by scuffing.
I second the OEM if available. There are stainless flexible aftermarket ones around but I have never used one so I can’t say if they are better.

 

Blue the end with a torch....

 

Chrome is pretty tough to 'scuff', I'd sandblast the last few inches.

I have a trans dip stick, it is a off white color. The trans fluid shows very well on it.

 

Drill a small 1/16" hole in it. If below the level should pull a film up.

I had to say pad rather than disc's because it's cheaper to rob from under the kitchen sink then buy these if one doesn't already have them for such a small detail.

I “painted”mine with white-out I had in my desk...works great..

 

that sounds good any danger of the trans fluid dissolving the paint

 

Not so far.... The way it drys, there must be a lot of lacquer or acetone in it... Remember it became illegal because of the old glue sniffers found it..

 

either a hole as mentioned, or a good whack with a center punch where its supposed to be

 

I've got a hole drilled in mine..

 

I have seen small holes over the years in dipsticks now I know what they are for usually in the engine compartment,by the time I get a car the dipstick its usually well discoloured.

 

just rubbed it down with scotchbrite pad today.helped a bit.be checking that in the shade from now on.i had bought a flexible dipstick from jegs a jegs brand one didn't use it I wasn't confident it would seal at the trans.the lokar one however at double the price looked a better option with a nut trapping a sealing washer and fitting to the trans case.eventually I used the dipstick that came with the trans oiltight so far.had to modify the mounting but happy with it now.

 

How about heat the end of the stick to blue it a bit?

I like the idea of drilling a couple holes up the dipstick end to the full line. Say maybe 1 at the add line and 1 at the full line.

I do remember by old pontiac having a hole in the dip stick
