I've always found the proportions of the Australian '34 5-window to be rather odd. Has anyone down there ever tried a chop and stretch to make it a bit sleeker? A little 'shopping:

Those are great photos. I didn't see any cars with chopped tops but I did see ones with raised roofs. Is this due to your laws on what is permitted? Also curious about the red '37 roadster. Is that a'36 body?

Great photos! Too bad someone flopped all the negatives.

    Wow. Fantastic photos...thanks for sharing.

I have to agree with @Chrisbcritter...those Aussie '33/'34s ARE strange. The door width is incredibly short, and those 1/4 panels...the distance from the door edge B pillar to the wheel well is huge. Here's a comparison vs the Aussie[IMG]

Since there are more photos now, I will again ask, why no chopped tops in sight?

There were a few chopped cars but as the majority of non roadsters were four door sedans, coupes and "slopers" were a little harder to find and it was a bigger deal to cut them up. Also the Aussie 34 coupes were difficult to chop due to the roof profile (as were the slopers). Also as Paul mentioned the cars were more like East Coast US rods with lots of channeling which precluded chopping the roof due to headroom concerns.

Well these are early photos and this coupe was later chopped and painted black in 1980. Will try to find a photo as it looks great. To answer the general question about chopped tops not being prevalent I guess that maybe not enough experienced people to do it. Lots of later cars chopped and as long as there is reasonable vision there is no real restriction to my knowledge.

  15. Re, chops, I'm going to guess that that was derived from racing on the lakes. That didn't happen here or east coast US and may have something to do with it. But as mentioned, channeling was popular here and east coast. The early influence here was speedway and closed course racing.

A few more here. Check out the red winged bird on the hood mascot. The second Mercury ute is a more recent build but still rare. The third picture is a local icon,Reg who has been around for decades and drives that car everywhere. Our lockdown restrictions have been relaxed from today and there is a special cruise to Reg's house tomorrow to show him support in his cancer battle. Cars must just cruise around the block, no stopping and one lap only. The last picture is the Essex that has been featured several times on this thread when it was originally built in the 60's and was red with a 6 cylinder and cycle fendered front and bobbed rear. This is after it was rebuilt by another Brisbane rodder and is much how it was when I acquired it and then did an update of running gear and got rid of the checked seat inserts. However I did replace with maroon velour!!! 95766635_154358086117320_3398843337719939072_o.jpg 95262062_3150351611693526_143092925729865728_n.jpg 95369861_10223050473676074_650905536409108480_o.jpg 95193299_154541966098932_2400953891752509440_o.jpg 95263104_2902744389760554_1207909781918973952_n.jpg 95313030_10219777186432796_1870550423111204864_o.jpg 95497085_154590656094063_2913924113909153792_o.jpg 96052287_10158184244392230_7503576189898850304_n.jpg Len Souter 1970.jpg 95461043_10219777187352819_2502387601806196736_o.jpg

A few more. Wedding picture has my old 32 4 door sedan at front. I can't remember doing that wedding and it may be before I owned it. Trying to get a date on the picture. I bought it after I sold the 29 roadster so maybe around late 1970. 96143238_2350437428584413_7318432897231224832_n.jpg 94883680_2350437338584422_1368726019044802560_n.jpg 95862900_2350437271917762_686204558354939904_n.jpg 32 Ford sedan.jpg 95490846_3263108123721599_3076052107061624832_o.jpg

1963 had come around and some of my mates needed Rusty Old Iron to start their projects and word had got to us of a great grave yard in Bathurst. So off we went with a borrowed car trailer and some keen Shifters Club Members.

Unfortunately Rock'n'roll Reg has taken a turn for the worse over night and has been rushed back to hospital so the Drive By for Reg today has been cancelled.
