I've heard that story before and the 428 was actually a 426 but that number and 427 were already taken by other engines. Gosh I love the sixties!

Ford liked to give you options.

427 - (really 425 ci) but good enough to beat Ferrari at their own game.
428 - a cheaper, much more mass producible version of the 427 that actually measures to 426.5 ci.
429 - First of the Lima/385 series of big blocks designed to replace the MEL family.
430 - The First 400 Hp rated V8 offered in North America in the 1958 Mercury Marauder.

Two days late but here’s my hotter version in my OT project Vette roadster. 4 bolt, 840 rectangular heads, and 12.5 to1 compression, she’s been sitting awhile…. F98CE300-2C06-408F-8670-27F638A6A6E7.jpeg 92D7D3F2-7F40-448F-9EDA-D60B0CDF7909.jpeg

“The Chevrolet Impala was introduced in 1958 as the top option level in the company’s Bel Air line. The Impala option added special trim, a deluxe interior and resulted in the highest selling price in the Chevrolet lineup. Performance was a priority from the beginning, as the first Impala could be ordered with a 315 hp, 348 V8 engine.”

    Hello,

With that idea in mind, we were owners of a pristine 348 powered 1958 Impala by the time the 1963 Chevy 427s hit the scene. The drag race scene was different with the tons of factory sponsorships taking over the normal guy stock car classes. By this time, we were out of the stock car racing scene and now had some good modifications done on the 58 Impala. Faster than stock, but not as powerful as the new Chevy 427 Impalas.

My friend’s dad just bought a new 63 Impala but, he had no need for a 427, so it was a small 283 4 barrel motor. But had all of the necessary things required by the then, “old folks” for comfort. (Bucket seats, center console and A/C. all worked out fine for us during the hot summer months.)

We knew the 427 was lurking in the Chevy parts and showrooms. The 58 Impala was 6 years old since we got it in the fall of 1957. So, it has seen plenty of action and total miles of coastal/mountain cruising. My brother was back in college in Los Angeles and his hot rod/drag racing involvement was waning. So, it was surfing and desert motorcycle racing, not hot rods or the latest from the factory hot rods.

When the 409s showed up, we were totally impressed with the power, but our Impala was relatively new in 1961, but the ache for a 409 power was there and easily attained if we had the money. Even our 348 could have been bored and stroked to provide a healthy 409 motor.
upload_2022-4-27_8-4-54.png In 1960, as our final race with the 671 SBC Willys raced against a 348 bored and stroked to a 409 Impala for the C/Gas eliminator title that summer night) But, college was calling and that similar motor set up idea was put on hold.

The 427 z-11 Impalas started showing up at Lion’s Dragstrip and showcased in the Drag News papers weekly, it was one hot set up for a stock bodied factory made sedan. There were tons of 427 powered Chevy sedans, but only a few of the Z-11 models. Since that was going to be a hard sell, we were told that a 409 could be stroked to a 427 and that Reath Automotive had the stroker kit ready. But, again, it was cash that was not available at the time.

In thinking about getting a 427 z-11 Impala or getting a stroked 409 from Reath Automotive for the install would have made the 58 Impala quite nice. But, a 427 may not have been the reliable start up in the morning for daily driving to school classes for the next several years. So, nice 427 day, but moot point here, we all had our future prospects and projects. YRMV

Funny you mention cel phone (I don’t own one), when I hear someone justifying why they can't afford better quality........whatever, I ask if they have a cel phone and of course they do, my response is usually the same.....I guess one has to choose;)

Love this post. My ‘57 Chevy PU has a LS5 454/th400. The only race I said no to was a local guy with an L88 427 in a late 60’s Chevy PU.
At 17 I thought to myself “why waste gas”?
