History Australian Historic Hot Rods

I am on a FaceBook page called Aussie Historic Hot Rods and there are lots of early photos from all over Australia. They include photos from Victoria particularly the drags and shows as well as photos from Sydney and Brisbane(my home town).
A lot of the cars still exist as well. Probably most noticeable here is that we really did a lot of channeled cars. Most of these cars date back to early 60's and into late 60's.
There may be some duplicates in here.

Yes and one of Brisbane's earliest hot rods. At a later stage it was redone fully fendered with a 361 Dodge and cast iron torqueflyte. I purchased it and shortly after fitted a 1975 Chrysler 360 and aluminium torqueflyte. The car is currently being restored in that configuration by another local hot rodder. Here are a few photos from the early days and an article on the car. Will find photo of current look.

 

Question....how difficult is it to speed shift with your left hand....?

Outstanding period shots of some outstanding period cars. We should be happy of the fact that hot rodding is a global phenomenon, a world-wide brotherhood for us all to be proud of. More, more, more !!!

OK here are some more from another FB page. Queensland Hot Rod History. This may contain some of the same cars as it was a small community back then. The first picture is the roadster I bought at the Brisbane Hot Rod Show in 1968 for $800. It was Y Block powered with 39 trans. I later rebuilt it and painted dark blue. Will put a picture up of it at a later show.
The picture #19 with the hiboy 32 roadsterwith number plat NWN 722 with owner/wife and child is the famous John Anderson roadster. It has been rebuilt with a lot of original parts including the number plate. When Cyclone Tracey went through Darwin on Christmas Eve 1974 John went missing and never found his body.

Here is my roadster after I rebuilt it and painted blue shown at the Brisbane Hot Rod Show 1970.
Also found a picture of the John Anderson roadster as it is now. And the last few I have for the moment

Man I remember the Woolworths supermarket on Logan Road when it looked like that. I went to primary school across the road from where those cars are.
Phil Dean's chrome radiator shell deuce was good enough to feature twice!

 

Well done @hudson48 . That took some time to post. Thankyou. I remember in the late 1960s just about any old "bomb" ( rusty project )could be bought for a tenner or two. This workshop pic you posted was just around the corner where i lived in Ringwood, Victoria. I believe Colin Bates still has the orange coupe and the white coupe. At the time they were restoring a Bugatti speedster. I would visit just to see the Bugatti . Never got to own one but did manage with old Fords .

 

This is awesome, I grew up in the 70's reading these old hot rod mags. I'm in another facebook group, Australian Hot Rod history, and its amazing to see the names of the people on there, sometimes I can still put a hot rod to the name, or a car they painted in the case of the artists. And the scribes and photographers - all heroes as a kid. Still have a pile of old magazines too.

 

Amazing - I wanted to post stuff about this and that car, but I think it's best to let the cars say it all.

Q: why do some of proportions look so off, on many of these Rods? Somethings wrong like the wheel base or front axle position??

Without referring to specific cars, it used to be very popular to upgrade to hydraulic brakes buy swapping in a 39 or later front end complete with brakes. Obviously the spring is in front of the axle but they never worried about moving the front cross member. The result moves the wheelbase back and makes the rad shell look too far forward.

You will also notice that the cars were a lot more like East Coast U.S. in build style.

 

X 38 is correct. The Australian hot rods of the early 60's were very much like the 60's east coast USA hot rods of the same era. And as you can see, I am partial to channeled roadsters.
