Folks Of Interest PSA scammer alert and HRP if you are there drop us a note

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by porknbeaner, Apr 25, 2020.

  1. OK I just started getting emails from Danny ( @HOTRODPRIMER ) asking me to buy him some iTunes cards. Says he cannot do it because he is traveling and the cards are for his niece.

I asked him some pertinent questions because Danny knows some things about me that are not common information which he did not answer just asked for the cards.

The emails come from a Hotmail account under the name of Danny Berry [email protected] and a bell south account [email protected] I have no idea how this person got my email maybe @Ryan knows.

    Anyway be wary

He posted earlier this week, I believe, about being hacked and not to respond to emails from him. Don't know where that thread is now.

That thread got locked, and probably has been pushed way down the pages.

  4. This one probably will too. But the deal is that aside from needing to know about the HRP angle we need to know that it could be coming from other accounts too.

He also posted that his email account had been hacked on the Ford Barn and on the '54 Ford Club of America Forum as well.

I hope he was able to get all of his passwords changed, and that he has not lost any money.

  7. The scammer has hacked into my e-mail and has sent everyone a email claiming I need help please reply to the email. they reply that I need gift cards for my niece and I am on the road and for people to replay if they can help, when any one tries to reply it goes to hotrodprimer @hotmail which is not me.

I post this as a warning yesterday and ask to please do not delete for anyone who gets a email from me, it wasn't deleted but it was locked (OFF TOPIC) and dropped like a rock, it's on page 12 as of this minute, I hope no one gets taken.

Beano, took the chance and ask question and got nothing but asking for more, I talked to a pal on the phone about an hour ago and he replied and ask what is need, he was told 400 dollars in gift cards, he told them because I was such a good friend he would send a $1,000 dollars if I could tell the scammer what color his car is and what he does for living - the conversation went dead.

I have received 81 phone calls since Wednesday morning, numerous e-mails and a bunch of you guys.

I can't figure out how he got some of the people but it seems the entire all deuce run list has been email, many of you guys and all my regular contacts, including my family, I even ask Ryan could they hacked my account here and he said it was not possible.

Believe me if I needed help from my friends I will call you on the phone. HRP

I've been hacked do not reply

Danny I hope you can get this resolved. You are way too good of a person to have shit like this happen to you.

  14. He got me because of my setting on my profile. I checked yesterday and you have the option of who sees stuff as any visitor or members only. Members only would mean that he/she would have to join the HAMB to harvest information. I guess it would not stop a scammer but it would make life harder for one and I do not have a problem at all with any of you all knowing how to find me.

Some information about me on the other hand only comes from relationship. I hope that you all have the same policy. Gawd knows if I want to know about you I will make an effort to develop a relationship with you.

  16. First for those that received one of the emails you need to take a photo or snapshot of the email, and use the dropdown on the address and take a snapshot of that also and send an email to your email provider. You should be able to block this person as a contact.
Second, go into your email preferences and add a filter. You will need to say in the "body" of the message the words....porn, bit coin, fb contact list. If you do not know how to do this call your email provider and they will walk you thru this. According to the internet this is a very common scam.

Received a message today from my email provider stating service would be terminated immediately unless I made payment for a past due balance. They thoughtfully provided a way for me to remit my bank info so service would not be interrupted. The message appeared very official, with proper logo and all. BEWARE! Thieves are ready to SCAM us all. I thought about responding with a message of my own - "Vete farin culo." Lucas

Unfortunately its Caveat Emptor when it really should be Caveat Semptor when dealing with these scammers.

I really can't understand how we've gone from.....get these sob's to watch out, figure out for yourself how not to be scammed. In our time, people who pulled this kind of crap would be hunted down, but now its rampant and nearly legal, because now its up to the victim to be aware. Crazy, I long for the good old days.

  21. This my friend is a sign of the times. One of the issues is that most of this comes either from West Africa or the eastern block both of which we have to real treaties with. its funny while I am not at odds with anyone who has posted on this thread I really posted for the people who are not as "worldly (?)" as those posting. Uh that was not an insult right?

The HAMB is larger than any of us any more but we are still a tight group generally speaking. I think that any one of us would be remis if we were not looking out for the other.

Beaner, you're right, it pleases me that we are tight and trust each other enough to put out a warning. It frustrates me that scamming is common and rampant, my dad and your dad would have gone hunting with baseball bats, you just did not do that kind of thing without repurcussions, now its ok.

  23. This is a cousin to the spam scam like when you receive an email from someone you know and it "recommends" that you buy some vitamin, beauty cream, or other product. Hackers can get your contact list or bulk mail list in some way or another. But this HRP deal is a little more targeted and preys on good-hearted, good-intentioned folks. I hope there's a warm spot in hell waiting for these kinds of bunko bast***s.

  24. My dad actually would have used the first thing he picked up. :D

I think that part of it has to do with how small and how large at the same time that our world is now. In our dad's world for example it was someone at the very least on this continent. its funny, most of you know who Big Daddy Ed Roth is/was (I hope). The story of the Rat Fink comes from a rip off that was perpetrated by a Kansas City shop owner. Maybe not the image but the name. Mr Roth as the story goes was ripped off my a Kansas City area shop owner, he was hanging with the men who later became the Road Ratz, Kansas City as they were friends that he visited when he was there. he was bummed and said, "That guy is a fink, he is a rat rink." and the name was born.

I didn't get the email in question, but consider Danny a good friend and communicate with him often, by email and phone.
I suspect the fact that my phone line, which is also the route taken by my internet connection, was down from Mon.am till Fri.pm was what avoided me getting whacked with this scam attempt also.

  26. Thanks beaner! I never noticed that option. Fixed mine.

Thank you greatly for the heads-up on the settings! Not that anybody would want to contact me, as I lurk rather that post a lot (why open up my mouth to say something the person before me has just said?), but it is appreciated.

On my personal emails (nationally known ISP) they keep putting things I mark as 'not spam' in the spam folder, and letting things that wouldn't fool a 5 year old, that clearly are going to launch a payload or vacuum out personal data, through. A small number of them are getting better, but I won't open anything I don't expect, even if it seems to be legit. At that point I'll pick up the phone and call the sender to ask if he/she actually sent something.

I generally “hover” over the sender on my emails senders names if the email looks “phishy”. Hovering over the sender with your curser should reveal the address and you can determine if it’s genuine or not.
