And where progress is up to now. Im pretty happy with how its starting to look. Rear frame horns will get the chop to follow the body line, and up front, the frame horns will get the chop so the tyres are the furthermost point forward.

 

Good choice. The panel truck had square doors, but the sedan delivery had the "Tombstone" door as seen below. Yours is going to be a great hot rod.

Looking at that hot rodded one, the owner must be a smaller size than me, as I found the short doors too hard for entry & exit. But as we didnt have any genuine two doors available down here to measure off, we did the "eyeometer" test and cut and shut from there. We made out door 45 inches and it looked out of proportion. Checked a mates 34 sedan than also started out as a four door, and his builder settled on 41 inches. His builder has a good eye for proportions.

So we cut our rear panel out and moved the pillar around till we decided it looked okay to us. Getting a bunch of us, and standing back about 10 foot while holding an adult beverage for a while was the key to selecting the right length. The door will be 41 inches more or less. Its funny how some numbers just work out right.

One of the crew did suggest that the car needed a 1/2 inch haircut thru the side and another 1/2 inch out of the crown to make the proportions right, but hes a restorer and owner of veteran Rolls Royces (the big polished alloy ones) so we agreed he was right and then ignored his advice

 

Any idea how many hours involved in the body work for this conversion, I would like a rough idea. Thanks.

 

Here's a concept I did for another member...Don't know if it ever got built.

 

Clem, the body guy thought it would take around 50 hours per side, and as he was selling me the car at the time, we included that in the buy price. That included lengthening the doors.

After I measured the gaps (by eyeometer) from pictures of how close the B pillar was to the rear guards, I figured that the door should be 45 inches. After we stood back and looked at it - the door hadnt been done by then but the rear door had been skinned and fitted - we figured it was a cock up as it just didnt look right. So we got the Rolls Royce guy from next door in to join us for his opinion, and we got the panel guy to cut the freshly done panel up and we shuffled the B pillar back and forth till we all agreed on what looked right. Redoing the B pillar on the RH side took another 10 hours to put right, and that was on me.

The panel guy is now thinking that there will be around 60 hours per side including extending the doors. On top of that theres the steeling out of the inside as the wood wasnt in great shape. The rear door is looking like another 50 hours work.

To be fair, the body was pretty daggy when I bought it.

We have discussed the fact that hes out the back door on the job so far, but hes also doing the chassis work and the electricals and overall, he will come out okay, and I will get what I want. Hes a mate, so I told him I expected him to do the three doors at the agreed price, (a good lesson in quoting) but that he could do the rest and charge me what he thought was fair and recover his losses there.

I think that all up, including steeling out the body, moving the B pillars, lengthening the doors and cutting the rear door and building the rear door frame, it will be at least 200 hours.

GasserTodd, You're welcome. I'm going to make a note of your method for determining the right length for the door. It sounds like the perfect method to me! I liked the way that you handled the restorer's advice, too. Very diplomatic. Hope to see more pix as your build progresses.

 

The dude with the veteran Rolls Royces has an excellent eye for proportions.

Hes got a fleet of other old cars, including an XK120 roadster, and hes building an alloy bodied air cooled Franklin race car that apparently crashed at the 1960 Australian Grand Prix. He designed a new body for it so it can be a two seater with a cage for his safety. The cage fits in under the alloy body, so altho hes a restorer, hes not scared to break all the rules to build something cool - and it will be street legal down here.

And hes got his late fathers old 30 Pontiac straight eight coupe thats truly stunning, and the fifth oldest Rolls Royce in the world. Hes just a car dude like all of us, but with an extended budget..

I have a ‘32 fordor that I often think would make a good sedan delivery. I wouldn’t lengthen the doors, but there is still a lot of work.
