Projects '23 Ford Roadster build aka The Incredible Hulk

I duno the difference. I've never put a calipers to them so I haven't paid any attention. I mostly deal with F-1's. I do have a pile of early F-100 era boxes, but haven't installed any in cars.

 

Maybe something along these lines.....

 

Perhaps you could bore the hole out on that one and make it work?

Bore, hone, broach...

To have the work done would cost more than a replacement especially when factoring in lost value to original.

I think I may have a line on one now.

 

Radiator came the other day. Inexpensive aluminum job, we'll see if that was money well spent.
As planned the only way to get a mechanical fan in there is to cut the blades clean off.

 

Going to have to loose the bottom of this slightly modified original deuce shell..

 

...Here's a neat trick done to the bottom of a lopped shell...pretty early period wise but perhaps an option...and then there was Kookie can't recall his mod perhaps it was similar...

I've used Champion aluminum radiators before and had good luck. If you scuff it up a little and shoot it in high temp bronze as a base before painting it black it gives it almost a brass look.

 

Can't help you on that one, sorry. Possibly not Ford?

 

Not that you asked but here are the headers on my roadster built in '58. My vote is to do them like Gene Chan's!

couple small (mundane) pieces of the puzzle.
first was the steering arm, a plain hairpin style.
Heat, bend and fill..

no, I didn't modify the spindle, it is how it came to me.

 

the other was a little more involved.

the '57-'58 stock thermostat housing when polished looked nice but
was pointing in the wrong direction.



so 'took some 2" od .120 wall tubing and using the rose bud and body hammer I slowly massaged the end to create a domed and almost closed end.



cut a small filler piece out of the same pipe to close the hole.



welded it in and started cleaning it up.

 

cut a 2" hole in a piece of 3/8" plate



used the cut off wheel in small grinder to cut the plate down a bit and used the saw to chop the domed end off the tube



sanded the corners off the rough cut plate



and back to the drill press





check fit on dummy



chopped a piece of 1-1/2" od .120 wall tube



sorry no pictures, but I figured the location of tube to point in a better direction,
ground the end to fit the contour of the dome
traced around the tube..

and cut the hole in the dome



and checked fit again
marked the pieces, tacked the pieces, checked the fit, broke the tack, repositioned the tube, mark, tack check...



welded it all up



and ground it roughly smooth and bolted it back on



hacked up some junk radiator hose and taped a couple pieces together to use as a pattern

as expected there is no way to fit the mechanical fan, there is very little space to fit any fan for that matter
I could fit a very thin electric fan behind or a small diameter one in front..

or a small one high in front and a small one behind low...

 

curious to work so hard on something just to make it disappear...

You make it look so easy! I was wondering what the hell you were doing when you were closing up that 2" pipe. It all makes sense now! Do you think you'll need to add a lip to the thermostat housing (with a simple weld) to keep the hose from popping off/leaking while under pressure?

 

It may not be totally necessary but I probably will put a lip on it

Thanks, you can see here a simple triangle wedge of 3/8" steel tacked to the axle hard up against the yoke? when straight ahead to keep it from rotating.
It will get fully welded and dressed, maybe it will disappear too..

 

Nice work, never tried to close up an end of pipe like that, I’ll have to try that sometime.

still pecking away at it,
more minor stuff,
'was holding off posting till each little thing gets done,
but what the hey, here's some stuff in progress..
front shocks going in,
rear spring mount going in..

 

rebuilt the F100 box,
drilled, tapped and cut down the mount flange while I was at it.

 

and started fitting it in place
