Technical So cal steering staibalizer

Has anyone installed a SoCal steering staibailzer or have any images on how it looks on their hot rod... debating if this is a product worth buying ... i own a 28 ford roadster on bias ply tires And the steering isn’t the greatest on long runs they grab every crack on the road... was told this item helps the steering issue ... would love to get some info , opinions or images if possible thank you

 

I always used one off a VW van..... but I’m pretty cheap..

Look for one for 68 vw beetle , about $18 if you shop , you'll have to make your own clamps & it may limit your turning radius . I mounted mine on the drag link , works great ....

 

Here is a picture from a few years back of my 34 frame, you can see the SoCal stabilizer. I have since finished the car and while I have never driven it without the stabilizer it does steer and handle very nice.

I had some bump steer issue issues on a pickup I built and could not find the problem stabilizer fixed that issue.Put one on my 28 three window as I am running bias plys and the car really handles well.Used both the socal and vw units.They both work good.Can find the vw units for around $20 if you look.Theres a lot of drama about using them but I have had good luck.

I have seen guys do exactly that. It would be a bit neater than the clamp on the wishbone.

 

Even though using one is a patch over thing for a prob that should be fixed,many times it works very well at far less $$$ then buy a new tire ect. So I like them for what they do. But will always try to fix first if I can
They can be mounted so fat end hides more out of site,like a bit under frame on axle an small end goes center of tie rod.

If you put a photo of your front set up,then we'd know how to talk about how to mount to your front. There are a lot of ways that front ends are done.
Also bias tires seem to be love by some,not me,no one can tell as I drive by what tire other then size is on my old rod{built in 1959}. But I can tell I have a much better ride.
I looked to see if any pics show the damper on my 28A,but not really,just the clamp can be seen on tie rod bottom left,so not much help. I don't own the type of phone that dose photos. So just save those others take of my rod.

 

Used a kit that was suppose to be from Pete and JAakes #1063. Trashed the mounts provided for both ends.

Made this to clamp onto the tie rod using a small heim end for a pivot instead of pivoting on a tie rod clamp. Bolt at back clamps it to tie rod.


The outside pivots off the radius rod and the mount also serves as a mount for the front panhard bar.

Cofap 22001 1704 4-A-06 for 1960-77 VW Beetle (MOOG #MOSSD8) or Alternative selection VW BUS 55½-79

 

Gabriel number.and get an alignment from someone that knows old cars

 

I have them on all 5 of my cars. 2 have split wishbones.

 

I have the same steering did build a bracket for the wishbone

I've had them on all my old Fords. Even if everything is set up right they just seem to absorb any "quiver" out of the road or steering giving it a smoother feel. I don't think it makes any difference, SoCal, P&J, VW, whatever, I have both a SoCal and a VW on the shelf and they feel the same.

No, it was on my race car 40 yrs ago. And behind the grille shell. Drilled a hole thru the tie rod and bolted a 90* piece of angle iron to the frame. I think they were less than $8.00 then.

 

Best photo I've got of how it looks, just tucks in behind axle. Unless your going the all chrome route or have it painted a contrasting colour it virtually disappears.


Only shot I could find that you could see it, just above the axle.

I found the VW/ Socal damper to be wimpy.....Used one for an Econoline van. Much more effective.

 

Isn't the Econoline quite a bit larger ?
