How many of you guys have installed a BBC in a 40 Ford? Was the biggest pain? making headers that clear steering box. I'm thinking fender well headers from maybe a Tri 5???
    Thanks

The biggest pain of all will be the folks telling you that you should have put a Ford in it.:D:p I have not done it myself but a friend has put a 427 Chevy in a 40 2dr sedan and other than he had to make his own headers and motor mounts it was pretty straight forward if I remember correctly. The SBC fits like a glove in a 40 and the BBC sits a little higher and closer to the radiator, but the motor mounts are in the exact same location measured from the bellhousing forward.

This is a Pontiac, not a BB Chevvie, but they are kind of similar in size. The biggest hiccup is headers and steering box.

If you go with a fenderwell header, it solves that issue. Surely, somebody will come along with an actual BBC in a 40 that will be of more help.

Make sure and post lots of pics.

Looks like the Indian proves to be even a bigger pain in the Arse for exhaust.
    Looks really good!
I'm just trying to decide what I want to do with this 40 Thanks Abone I appreciate your input!

A 348/409 fits pretty good. Hurst style front mount. Clears the firewall with virtually no mods, so I think a bbc should fit

OK I will if I ever get started on it, I think I'm going to order a 200 dollar set of speedway fenderwell headers to get started.

As long as it's a 572 I'm ok with it; with a Sonnys crank and 600+'s would be better....

That's ok. If you are busy today, tomorrow will work. ;)

  14. Look up Jerry Moreland and his 40 sedan, I can't post pictures of it because every time I do they get deleted for some stupid reason, but he had a blown big block in it.
It's a smart move to get those headers first, that way you can move the motor around so the headers fit, then lock it in.

i used stock exhaust manifolds, no other issues except the firewall needs setback

  16. Did a 427 BBC in one maybe 10 years ago. Used an EMS recessed firewall and block hugger headers. Made tubular supports off the frame for the motor mounts to clear the steering and fit like a glove.

I thought about that what manifolds did you use?
It looks like the block huggers are only 1 3/4 primarily size I’m thing stock manifolds would flow jus as good!

I have the same firewall and no it’s just clamped into place so far
I was trying to give the locked up flathead away but the deal fell through so I guess I’ll scrap it
Anyone in the Kansas City area want it come get it

A BBC is 1 1/2" longer than a SBC. The short water pump BBC overall length falls between the Short water pump and long water pump SBC. A long water pump SBC will fit in a 40 without touching the firewall, therefore, a short water pump BBC will fit in a 40 using the same mounts as a small block because the small block and big block are the same size from the back of the block to the motormounts.

Shameless plug, but I have what was told to me as a BBC to 35-40 engine mount. Looks like a Hurst, but is steel. Holler if it helps you out.

I have a 40 with a BBC... it was built in the 70s with Tri5 FW Headers.... I'm looking for a set that isn't inline with the wheels... Also, these headers heat up the fenders a lot. fwhdrs.png

My 40 with BBC has a long water pump... passenger valve cover hits firewall and pump pulley is 3/8" from radiator. I am swapping to short water pump... that 1.5" difference is much needed. l2.jpg r2.jpg

  29. This belonged to the late Bill Akin in Nashville area. If someone knows its whereabouts now, it was a nice setup that saw A LOT of miles over many years. Worth duplicating If someone could look at it closer.
