My sityation during this pandemic is ,im considered a esential worker so im not experiencing to much economic hardship, but ive Been talking with a few friends lately and the subject of buying selling cars or parts came up. We all sort of agreed that this virus situation is putting a big chill on the hobby currently and for the foreseeable future..i am thinking of starting a new project for next WCK Santa Maria meet...but i may put it on hold for a year im thinking..what are ur thoughts fellas?

Neighbor, I wouldn’t start anything I didn’t have every single part for. I doubt labor costs you need to pay for will not come down unless shops are really hurting. Then will it be the same quality?

My son is essential too ( lineman..a good choice 30 yrs ago) and I’m retired and have been very very fortunate with my 401k. We want to get back out to our 1/2mile dirt car but it might be a struggle and we don’t need any tires either.

I feel the same about El Mirage as I can load tomorrow but everything is cancelled in racing as you know....

  3. If you have the startings already then I would say to continue. The parts are still out there, people are still selling but face to face might be down for now. I hate to sound like a vulture but it will be a buyers market soon (parts/cars/tools).

I'm retired and on the other end of the spectrum as I rather enjoy not having my wife want to go somewhere about the time I get in the big middle of a project. I've been getting a little round to it around the place knocked out almost every day and have been able to do a few hot rod projects. Right now the big thing stalling guys getting their own work on their projects that they have in their own garages might be money if they don't have major parts they need. Yes we don't get to go to a few shows or swapmeets but we don't have any two week all hours thrashes going on to get a car ready for the lakes or a specific show that we intended to debut it at. That hopefully brings a bit more relaxed pace, far less stress and the car ends up a bit better for it. It shouldn't be sitting in the corner crying poor me I can't go out and play the world hates me.
I've got two relatives that cry about what they can't do that they might have done every day several times a day. One is at least a bit productive and will probably be so far ahead around home with things like putting away next winter's firewood and getting other things knocked out that when the time comes he can go do stuff he will be dizzy figuring out what he is going to do first. The other one will just sit and feel sorry for himself while claiming conspiracy and govt overcontrol. He is a cop and works in a town with a high number of homeless drunks and druggies wandering around and I fear for his safety more than he does.

I just wish this daily wind would quit or slow down as every time I start mig welding something the wind comes up and I do all of my welding outside.

  5. Do you have more than one project you already own? Or a running driving vintage car? Is it done? Why not give that a going through? Make it better.

I’m with most where it may not be the right time to put TOY money where you will loose it.
Im lucky I get to work from home. But one never knows how long it will last. If this goes longer. It seems to me, anyone selling stuff should lower their prices. If the actually need the money.
yeah then there is the case of getting parts, hence buying the most complete version of the car you want.

  6. It's gonna be a buyers market. Roof over your head, food in your mouth, or toy in the garage. Shouldn't be a tough decision. Probably gonna see some $1000.00 32 grill shells actually sell for what they're really worth. Probably gonna take a big slice out of 'pie-in-the-sky' asking prices too. Nobody said life was easy, and if they did, they were lying.

I'm 77, widower, doing okay. I need a radiator for my '40. For last couple of weeks I was pulling back, as some of the earlier posters had expressed. Worried that I should save my money. But talking with the kids yesterday, we did social distancing in lawn chairs on my front lawn, I have decided to order a radiator today through a local speed shop. I guess at my age you might as well, within reason, just continue living as best you can. I have asbestosis in both lungs due to riding submarines in the '60s for Uncle Sam so I really have to sequester. But to give up, and withdraw from the hobby I love, might be the last straw to keeping my sanity. I can work in the garage and look forward to driving some this summer I hope.

  8. I’m seeing it already.

doing Reno’s on a house I bought and have been looking for tools, 15 dollar makita drywall gun ! Sure
20 dollar dewalt drywall cutter ! Ok
Bosch sds max drill with 10 bits and chisels for $200!

I feel bad for these guys out of work and doing what they need to go feed there families.
But even if this virus up and leaves tomorrow, the financial damage has been done. Looking at atleast 2 years or more for the economy to come back from this.
The longer the virus lingers, the longer and worse it’s going to be to get out.

I am 70 with congestive heart failure,COPD and high blood pressure. Tomorrow might be my last without a virus. I have only one piece of my SEGA super stock build that I haven't been able to get because of the shut down . That's my input shaft from Liberty Gears because Michigan is on lock down.
I am working 3 to 4 days a week at a golf course and so has my wife who has health issues. The business has been setting records almost every day because people are trapped at home and golf is on the list of outdoor activities that has been cleared by the TN. governor. We take all of the precautions mandated by the CDC and health dept. I made a sneeze shield for the cash register counter ,the pro shop gets wiped down hourly. The carts are sanitized after each round. Then at night we spray them with a bleach solution. We don't allow more than 2 golfers in the pro shop at anytime.
I am more worried about going to Walmart than I am going to work.
I say if your money source is secure and you feel good about ordering parts and building a project go for it. I told my son if I get it he has to promise me he will finish my car and keep it .

I don't know how to say this and not sound crude but this virus is so cruel and aggresive. I don't think I will be starting anything big for the duration. I don't think that it would be fair to the people who would have to kleen up after me. Iowa/Minnesota haven't had there time as a
"hot spot" yet but the numbers are going up.

I've been working out of the house for 20 years, so not a big change for me, except I'm not going out to see any customer's these days. and not travelling for any meetings, so laying low and staying home, but continuing to work and draw a paycheck.

Re the car market, I think things could get real tough in general economically, especially if the gov't doesn't ease up and restart the economy. If we don't get things going I think we'll be looking at great depression era economics, IMO it's vital to get things going again. But if those who want to keep it shut down win the argument, then look for the classic car market to take a huge hit. Prices are gonna drop like a rock. Sellers that are trying to draw top dollar for their cars right now are dreaming.

This is a 2 edged sword. For those hoping to sell their cars and not lose any money, this is going to be hard for them. But on the other side, you'll be able to buy some really great cars at fire sale prices. That deuce roadster or 40 coupe you've been dreaming about will be much easier to get for those that haven't lost everything through this quarantine.

  14. I have another car to go look at when the seller is ready, so it may be a buyer's market. I retire in 4 days, took off today since we have an asinine procedure to get into the building and it is pouring out. My health is stable and I take my medication every day. I'm doing things around the house, crawled under the Ford yesterday to get a couple of things done.

  15. I'm retired and debt-free, have good health and no bills to speak of. My retirement income is enough to pay for my "hobbies", etc. It looks like I'm going to get a "stimulus check" from what I'm told. That makes me feel pretty odd because the shut down hasn't impacted me financially. One way I plan to get the cash back into jump-starting the economy is to double down on tips to the food server folks and let them spend it.

  16. “Unessential” teacher here.
Gonna build in the garage as long as the parts hold out. That’s a long time.
I’m good as long as the welding and steel supply place is open.

I think we will see a drop in prices on toys and a lot more stuff for sale. A lot of people live paycheck to paycheck and owe on everything. I think the economy is going to be ugly for quite a while.

I have enough projects and parts laying around right now to keep me busy until well after death, so don't foresee spending much money for anything. I am out of Argon/CO² right now, so that's going to be my big expense this week.

I guess I'm lucky. Retired three years ago, self-funded retirement as I took any pension buyouts that were offered and invested wisely. Still not collecting Social Security, letting it grow at 8% a year as it's the best investment there is right now. My biggest concern is how my kids will fare through this economic downturn, and how it will affect them. Our daughter got her first "real" job since graduating from college three weeks ago, and she has been working from our home since then. Other than an interview three months ago, she never has been to her office in Washington DC, and won't be until the Corona threat is significantly reduced. Our son is finishing up his Masters degree in Fisheries Biology in the next couple of months, and has interviewed for a couple of Department of Wildlife position, but probably won;t be employed until the degree is wrapped up.

I got one for sale and do not expect to sell it, Don't care, they are built with disposable cash, they are a hobby, my cars owe me nothing. Totally paid for, I don't care if the market for cars dries up, all I want out of my roadster is what I got in it, makes it a pretty good buy all round, if it don't sell, I'll build bird houses, build a garden tractor racer, custom bicycle, sex toys, who knows? It's how I keep busy, at two o clock its sit on the deck time with a beer, no matter what is going on in the world, life is to be lived, the best way we can.

  21. The economy will do one of two things.
Get crazy bad or recover crazy fast.
I’m about 75/25 leaning towards a crazy fast recovery.
I have zero control of nothing either way, only my reaction to either result.
    Life is good.

    Hello,
You and all of the teachers in the world are ESSENTIAL You are the guides for the future generation. It is standard procedure for all teachers to be there when needed. In the long run, you will always be essential. Teachers' rule! Creativity rules!

    Jnaki
For what most teachers do, it is a form of charity work that most parents cannot or will not try or attempt to do. They do look up to teachers for some guidance. Keep up the good work...

    Stay safe and healthy...

As far as any stimulus checks are concerned, ( whether or not we qualify, there isn't a worry about it...) But, our son and his family will be getting theirs and ours if we get them, too. We are OK physically and mentally... Our locked in place procedures are very similar to what we are used to doing prior to the pandemic. As long as we are in contact with friends, family and can see that they are OK, then we are OK. We just can't go anywhere we had planned...but there will be plenty of time for that. Endure...

  23. Just keep doing what you want. This will pass, just look at history. Stay safe for now and enjoy the buyers market.
I am selling my coupe (The Coleman Coupe) but it has nothing to do with the virus. I have very bad arthritis and it is getting difficult keeping up with things. But I would not let the current situation stop me from buying or building if that was my plan. Good time to buy because things are going to get really good really fast. It's The American Way!

Personally , I have the ‘27 T Tudor for sale and I want to list parts on here because I want to clear some space . My problem is I am addicted to vintage cool parts and if stuff others have for sale become “fire sale” priced I know I will come down with the “ssshakes”. I will be like Tim the tool man Taylor’s neighbor and have to peak over the parts pile to see the wife . :) Anyways , more important is that we all stay safe so we can continue to enjoy this hobby when things get back to somewhat normal .

The silver lining is there should be a few more finished or somewhat finished projects when we can go back to socializing.

Age puts me in an "at risk" category but I'm not a paranoid hypochondriac so I'm anxious to get things rolling again. Motorcycle and Thunderbird projects to finish. There will be golden deals come around like we may never see again.
    Be smart and safe.

I called to purchase a minicomp shift computer for the 518 in my truck project and the guy said he is so busy he can't keep up! Everyone is working on their cars. Summit warned me it could take extra long to get my parts, they still showed up the next day! It is sunny and warm this week, driving the rag tops and playing golf (in Oregon where it is allowed) whenever I'm not in the garage working. I miss the casinos but I'm saving money!
