Technical 32 pickup fender filler panel

Is this a factory filler piece in the rear fender above running board between chassis of a 32 ford pickup.

 

Normally that filler piece was stamped into the fender. Your setup might be something just for your country? I've never seen a 32 pickup with a wood filer piece. There might have been something real early but I don't know about it.

 

Could be someone put sometime like a model A fender,or a 33-34 on,and used that to fill a gap.My 32 PU doesnt use that spacer.A side picture of the fender might help ID whats going on with yours.

 

Its an early 32 without the K legs on the crossmember. From memory I think its an early april build B4. A fairly original truck. Strange how the rear fenders seem to tuck in as the get towards the running boards. and the running board extends about 1/2” past the fender. I am not concerned at at all just curious, the truck has many years of well earned battle scars and while in our care will remain that way.
I have another pair of pickup rear fenders here , well 2 but they are not a matching pair . The frame spacers are way different to each other ,one is 1 1/2” the other 1”. Both spacers are part of the fender though hard to tell as one is slathered in filler and not pretty . I also have a nice pair of roadster fenders where the infill bit is smaller and different again.

I would guess one fender is a 33/34 and the other is a 32. At the fender mounting area a deuce is 43 1/2 wide and the 33/34 is 44 that would account for some of the different widths. The fenders on your truck may be some form of early aftermarket replacement?

 

My 32 fender/running board are flush on the outside.I bet theres been a replacement long ago with a 33-34.

 

Do your fenders have round mounting holes or slotted? Original Fords were round. The early replacements (I forget the name, Folsom?) were slotted. And there are some Chevy trucks that look a lot like Fords, and I think they have slotted holes too.

 

Alchemy is right again, I've seen chevy fenders that look real close. I think ford pu fenders have a tight 90 where they meet the bed side and a chevy has a radius. The tails are also shorter and don't look like a 32

 

These have round mounting holes. There are a few unused holes that have no corresponding hole in the deck. They have a radius where they meet the deck.
Who know what all the PO did over the years.

 

I checked an old beat up pu fender I have and I was wrong about the tight 90 where it bolts to the bed side, it has a radius. But I bet some one in the past changed yours. It's cool your leaving it like it is, Looks like a nice truck in the pix.

 

I think you might be right. I have three pairs of rear fenders here and all have a tighter radius on that inner edge. Not a hard 90 but tighter than what I see in these pics.

Those aren't pickup fenders. The '32 (and '33/34) pickup fenders don't have the gentle round-over from the top of the fender to the flange that bolts to the bed. That radius is much sharper on the truck fenders; perhaps like a 1/4" radius.

These also look to be too bulbous through the lateral cross-section to be OE '32 roadster/coupe fenders, which people sometimes used since the pickup fenders were hard to find before the United Pacific reproductions.

 

I believe that outside/aftermarket supplier was Fostoria.

 

Hmmm. I have a pair of filler slathered rear pickup fenders with suspect frame filler bits probably welded on , they measure 10” wide at the crown and 44 1/2 end to end.
Then I have a pair of what I believe to be repro steel roadster rears and they measure 11” wide at the crown and 44 1/2 long .
The ones on the truck measure 10 3/4 at the crown and 43” long .I am fairly sure they are not PU fenders as the original ones I have are 1/2” wider at the bottom making them the same width as the running board.
The roadster ones have a flatter crown , and PU ones have more crown as do the ones on the truck.

Bryan, makes me wonder if they are a Ford product at all, could be sedan fenders off a late 20's early 30's Chev or similar.

 

Thanks guys , just curious, dont want to think they could be Chev though. For this old jalopy its a bit worn and used so it all adds character. Just waiting for the open lock down so we can get the block and OHV conversion from the machinist, let the fun begin.
